Work Area Manager

National Distribution Centre

At the National Distribution Centre things are changing!  With responsibility for 60% of the nation’s mail every day we can’t afford to stand still.  It’s a huge responsibility.  We have a direct impact on about £4.7bn of Royal Mail revenue every year - that’s significantly more responsibility than anywhere else in the entire network.  This makes our managerial roles challenging and incredibly fast-paced.  But if you want to be part of something exciting, something which is revolutionising the way we do our business, something which will get you noticed, then you should think about joining our team.

About the role

We are being completely honest when we say this is a hard role.  In the last 12 months we have experienced unprecedented levels of growth.  Our cross-docking operation hit an all-time record over Christmas handling 37,000 Yorks in 24 hours on its busiest day.  That was several thousand more than we imagined we could do and was only made possible by the skill and determination of the team on the floor.  Our Tracked parcel operation is equally as impressive with many of the high street’s most famous retailers trusting the National Distribution Centre with their online order fulfilment.  And the growth is continuing.  Every week we are bringing in new customers and our cross docking operation continues to grow at around 20% year on year.  It’s not big, it’s enormous.  And our interdependence with the rest of the Royal Mail network means that if we fail, they all fail.

So when we say that the NDC is the place to be, we mean it!

As a Work Area Manager you will have line management responsibility for a team of front line staff.  The role will involve managing your team’s sick absence, attendance, training and development.  You will have responsibility for safety and engagement and will get involved in our programme of Continuous Improvement.  Working closely alongside trade union representatives, you’ll ensure your team understands the commercial and competitive market we are in. They’ll need to be customer focussed, open to new technology and flexible to change. There’s a lot to do at the NDC and you can be sure that the work will be varied and exciting.

Utilising your first-rate change management experience, you’ll use data analysis to influence and enhance decision making, and be responsible for ensuring the performance of your team, along with effectively maintaining the quality of service for our customers (productivity, automation and employee targets), and guaranteeing the overall safety of the people you manage.

Furthermore, you will support the  Shift Manager, and have a strong track record of delivering performance through your personal leadership of large teams in a changing operational environment. Through conducting regular one-to-one and team meetings, alongside analysing your area’s performance data and plans on a daily basis, you will imbed your stakeholder management skills and delivery process knowledge.

There are 2 roles avalible with different shift patterns

Shift 1:  Monday 06:00 to 18:12, Thursday and Friday 18:00 to 02:12, Saturday 18:00 to 06:12- This role attracts a shift allowance

Shift 2: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 19:00 to 02:00, Saturday 18:00 to 02:00, Sunday 14:00 to 02:00. This role attracts a shift allowance

About you

You don’t need logistics or even operations experience to become a Manager at the NDC.  Why?  Because in our operation people are our biggest asset!  If you can lead, motivate and inspire people to achieve great things even in the most challenging of circumstances then what are you waiting for?

But wait, you will need a high level of emotional intelligence to go with this because remember you are managing people and you will need to engage them to create a winning team to support you.  You will also have a passion to consistently improve results helping us to drive relentless change for the benefit of our people and our customers.

As well as managing our people, our operation requires an ability to think strategically, logically tackling complex problems, often under pressure.  This, coupled with a good numerical understanding will help you become a successful Manager at the NDC.

We are looking for people with bags of resilience and a huge amount of grit and determination.  We need you to have a “can do” attitude and when the going gets tough we need you to come back fighting (and smiling!) the next day because you thrive on the energy and adrenaline of a fast-paced environment and because you share our vision to make a difference!

If you are a team player, who challenges the status quo, who can think outside of the box and are not afraid to have a go then we want to hear from you!  Most importantly, we are looking for people with attitude whether this is at work, or in the things you do in your free time.
