£79-85K + benefits

Responsibilities

The Principal Data Engineer plays a pivotal role in leading the organisations strategic adoption of data virtualization. You will drive the overall design, implementation, and continuous evolution of the Business Intelligence solutions within this architecture. Collaborating across teams, you'll establish best practices, mentor engineers, and ensure solutions align with long-term goals. To succeed, you will understand the benefits of data virtualization, possess a strong understanding of BI landscapes, and the ability to translate business needs into scalable, efficient data architectures. Proactively working with business stakeholders, you'll drive the delivery of value through tools like Power BI and Qlik, providing well-structured data sets to empower their own analytics projects. Excellent communication and leadership skills will be essential for building strong partnerships across the organization.

Core skills

  • Familiarity with data virtualization tools or concepts.
  • Strong understanding of how to design scalable cloud-based data solutions.
  • The ability to guide a team, establish best practices, and foster technical growth in their team members.
  • Strategic vision with an ability to build a roadmap for the data landscape.
  • Problem-solving, adaptability and the ability to balance competing needs and priorities from different stakeholders.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Strong foundation in SQL development.
  • Solid understanding of data warehousing, dimensional modelling, etc., and how they apply in a virtualized environment.
  • Experience owning complex data projects, including budgeting, timelines, and cross-team coordination.
  • Ability to articulate complex technical concepts to executives, build consensus, and advocate for the data team.

Advantageous Skills

  • Data Virtualization expertise and hands-on experience with leading tools.
  • Understanding of the challenges faced by local and regional government organisations.
  • Cloud architect certifications or those demonstrating advanced data management expertise.
