We are seeking a Policy and External Affairs Manager to act as a strategic partner to our Chief Executive and Leadership Team. This role is pivotal in building relationships across the council and with external stakeholders, ensuring effective governance, and contributing to the delivery of key corporate priorities.
Day to Day of the role:
- Act as a strategic partner to the Chief Executive and Leadership Team, fostering positive relationships within the council and externally.
- Communicate effectively with senior councillors and stakeholders, understanding and prioritising the Chief Executive’s objectives.
- Handle all correspondence for the Chief Executive’s Office efficiently.
- Work autonomously to provide policy support, including briefings, special projects, and research.
- Organise stakeholder events to a professional standard.
- Contribute significantly to the council’s governance and the achievement of corporate goals.
- Manage and mentor Personal/Executive Assistants supporting the Leadership Team.
- Supervise employees in line with HR policies and management competencies.
- Adapt to varying duties as required without changing the general nature of the role or level of responsibility.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Degree level education or equivalent experience in policy development and external affairs.
- Proficient in Microsoft 365.
- Experience providing executive support or in a senior leadership role within a complex organisation.
- Strong track record of building and maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Proven project management skills.
- Experience working with Councillors or equivalent in a politically sensitive environment.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Flexibility and resilience in a fast-paced and demanding environment.
- Team player with a positive outlook and confidence to take initiative.
- Strong analytical and research skills with the ability to summarise complex information for decision-making.
- Understanding of equal opportunities and diversity in employment and service delivery.
- Skilled in influencing senior stakeholders with diplomacy and negotiation.
- Collaborative, trustworthy, and adept at mediating and delegating.
- Self-disciplined with the ability to meet deadlines and maintain professional integrity.
- Flexible working hours and availability for evening meetings/events as needed.
