Join the team in Food & Environmental Proficiency Testing Unit (FEPTU) at UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and make a difference in supporting the work we do.

FEPTU is part External Quality Assurance services and provide external quality assessment (EQA) schemes for food, water and clinical microbiology laboratories throughout the United Kingdom, and worldwide. Results reported by microbiology laboratories often play a significant role in health protection and managing public health incidents; tools such as External quality assessment/Proficiency Testing is essential for laboratories to be able to demonstrate that their results are accurate, reliable and reproducible.

We are looking for a supervisor to oversee laboratory activities, staff and provide technical support for the unit. The post holder will have scientific knowledge and be able to carry out molecular and culture microbiological tests; schedule laboratory work to meet deadlines; allocate daily procedures to other laboratory staff; ensure that the quality system and standard operating procedures are followed; train staff and audit procedures. The supervisor also has a role in procuring laboratory supplies and equipment, stock control, undertaking risk assessments and preparing laboratory documentation.

Based at UKHSA Colindale - due to the nature of the role, you will be expected to be based on-site on a full-time basis

Responsibilities section:

The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:

Your Key Responsibilities will include:

  • Contribute to the development of new protocols/procedures for External Quality Assessment (PT) samples.
  • Perform procedures and interpret and record test results according to given protocols for the production, quality control and evaluation of PT samples, and other quality products provided by FEPTU.
  • Apply knowledge of the relevant microbiology specialism (food and/or water microbiology) in the design, quality control and stability testing of PT samples (current and future) - including those for molecular testing.
  • Plan long-term and day-to-day laboratory procedures to meet the FEPTU schedules in consultation with the Laboratory Co-ordinator/Quality Manager.
  • Prepare and review documents and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Work with the Laboratory Co-ordinator/Quality Manager to ensure that an on-going training development is managed for all laboratory staff for all FEPTU procedures.
  • Ensure procurement of laboratory supplies and culture media is undertaken in a timely manner.

Essential Criteria:

Essential

  • Degree in biological/biomedical science/food/water microbiology or a related subject
  • Maths and English GCSE: C or above
  • Experience of food and water microbiology testing or extensive laboratory experience in microbiology laboratory
  • Experience of working in an accredited UKAS laboratory
  • Ability to analyse and interpret microbiological testing information
  • To be able to work unsupervised and experience of supervising others

Desirable

  • Postgraduate degree in biological/biomedical science/food/water microbiology or a related subject
  • Can demonstrate understanding of quality systems
  • Molecular diagnostic experience
  • Experience of data analysis
