Job Purpose
As Data Science lead you will manage a team of high functioning Data Scientists to help with our growth strategy. You will ensure that your team are contributing to both the short- and long-term decision making of the business, as you help to embed the utilisation of data as a product, this could range from building propensity modelling, LTV predictions, incremental testing, segmentation modelling, econometrics in addition to guiding each team member to set ambitious strategies, working towards these in a data driven way. Good customer and commercial outcomes will be executed through your analytics. Proven incremental benefit through well-structured data science, analytics, and modelling, will help promote the benefits of the function.

You will work collaboratively with Proposition and Pricing teams, Marketing, Risk, Finance, Customer Service, and IT & Change to set out and deliver a long-term strategy for growth using data. You will share this vision and progress with the senior leadership team and the Executive. You will create and maintain a series of use cases, which showcase the use of data science, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. You will have substantial management experience, confident working with senior leaders, Executive and Board members. In addition to management experience, marketing experience is important, with a track record of driving growth using multiple levers and a strong ability of being able to drive decisions with data and history of management.

You will be responsible for influencing product, marketing, and business outcomes, having the autonomy to make things happen and must obsess about having business impact. You will drive a high standard of work and hold a high bar for impact. You will help to support the requirements of a modern data platform to underpin the company's growth through data services, ensuring standards and technologies create efficient analysis for transactional and strategic modelling. You will drive innovative data science techniques into the business, utilising AI & ML technologies.

You will be working collaboratively across a Data Council to deliver strategic data driven initiatives. You'll have the opportunity to make a difference with your skills and you'll mentor team members to help them develop, both through direct and matrix management. You will have a direct impact on increasing data literacy within CLUK.

This role requires a deep understanding of data science techniques and services. The role is a technical role and as such you will have a wealth of experience in driving data-driven decision-making across the organisation. You will be able to tackle complex problems using a range of methods, guiding your team through a constant test and learn culture, helping to raise the bar and to help innovate.

Duties/Responsibilities

Data Science strategy, vision, and roadmap
  • Support the Head of Data & Insight by defining and communicating the data science strategy, vision, and roadmap. Identifying use cases that support the long-term customer and commercial strategy within the business. Prioritising cases based on good customer outcomes, business objectives and customer experience.
Business requirements and data development through Data Science
  • Collaborating with business stakeholders and Data Council to gather and document detailed requirements for data science use cases, including defining use cases, acceptance criteria and functional specifications. Working closely with the IT and change functions in an agile environment, participating in sprints, backlog and daily stand-ups, as well as provide data science oversight to the product owner SMEs. You will be expected to provide guidance and clarification on product requirements, review and approve deliverables and ensure timely and high-quality product releases for the business.
Managing a team of Data Scientists
  • Day-to-day management of a team of data science specialists.
  • Helping the team to determine the best route for tackling use cases (which might be determined by understanding the scope, identifying possible techniques and approaches, and outlining both the business and technical advantages or drawbacks to each).
Improving data literacy across the business
  • Engage with both technical and non-technical audiences to explain the business value of a data science projects.
Project delivery
  • You will be required to build innovative and effective approaches to solving analytics problems and communicating clear and relevant results and methodologies to internal stakeholders. Will include business as usual as well as special projects.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Extensive experience of managing multidisciplinary data teams (including data science, software development, research)
  • Experience of "in the field" practitioner experience of various analytical methods including Machine Learning & Articifical Intelligence
  • Experience of Business Analytics,
  • Experience stakeholder management, including senior leaders, Executives and Board members.
  • Marketing experience, with a track record of achieving growth using data driven reasoning
