Leicestershire County Council are looking for a Tree Inspector to join thier team. The successful candidate will be responsible for inspecting, assessing, and reporting on the condition of roadside and other trees, determining the ownership of trees on private land, and providing technical information for the serving of notices to remedy defects. A key part of the role will be to monitor the progression of Ash die-back in Leicestershire. The role also involves maintaining and updating computerised tree inventories and inspection records, issuing work instructions to contractors, and carrying out a range of other forestry and arboricultural related tasks.

Day-to-day of the role:
  • Conduct regular inspections of trees adjacent to highways and other sites in the county to identify potential hazards.
  • Ascertain the ownership of any trees with defects.
  • Prepare detailed reports and plans on defective trees to facilitate the serving of notices.
  • Follow up to ensure that remedial works have been carried out.
  • Maintain and update records of tree inspections and inventories.
  • Monitor the progression of Ash die-back and make management recommendations.
  • Manage and extract information from computer databases.
  • Issue work instructions to contractors and supervise the completion of work.
  • Stay informed on forestry and arboricultural practices, including the identification of species and diseases.
  • Handle technical communications for senior staff in their absence.
  • Provide support for the forestry and arboricultural service as needed.
  • Respond to emergencies and planned events related to the work, which may include out-of-hours attendance.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • Experience in forestry, arboriculture, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in using computer databases and maintaining records.
  • Strong report writing and plan preparation skills.
  • Valid driving licence.
  • Flexibility to work outside of normal working hours and attend training courses or meetings as required.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to handle technical queries.

The role will entail site inspections across Leicestershire’s highway network and County Council property. Use of own car and ability to navigate difficult terrain is essential.
