PICU is a 14 bedded regional lead centre providing care for critically ill children from birth up to 18 years of age. The unit looks after 950 to 1000 patients per year across southern and central England; it is the sixth largest PICU by numbers of admissions and has one of the best survival rates.

Children are referred to us from hospitals as far afield as Plymouth, Milton Keynes and the Channel Islands. PICU provides a unit based 24 hour retrieval service, known as the Southampton and Oxford Retrieval Team (SORT) covering the Thames Valley and Wessex regions in collaboration with Oxford PICU.

PICU offers fantastic development opportunities, including education, research, training, involvement with quality improvement projects, collaborating with leading paediatric teams, becoming a member of the retrieval team and specialist training for providing highly skilled services such as ECMO. PICU has a dedicated Lecturer practitioner and Clinical facilitators to support staff development through opportunities to gain speciality skills, including a thorough induction, foundation programme and the PICU course.
