Senior Lawyer – Litigation at Waverley Borough Council

Remuneration: £51,410 - £55,400 per annum, market supplement of up to £4,786 per annum and generous benefits including Local Government Pension Scheme.

Introduction:
This is an exciting time for Legal Services at Waverley. We’ve recently undergone a restructure and are now taking steps to appoint a number of key roles within this fast paced team environment. These new roles will help shape the future of the team, as we seek to contribute to the delivery of our overall Council commitments for the Borough and its residents.

As Senior Lawyer – Litigation, you will manage a mixed caseload of both civil and criminal matters, conducting your own advocacy in the County and Magistrates Court. You will also advise on licensing matters and be the first point of contact for all litigious matters..

Key Responsibilities:

  • Undertaking a caseload of criminal and civil litigation advising on regulatory and prosecutions matters, civil claims against the council and possessions and housing disrepair
  • Conducting your own advocacy in both the magistrates and county courts
  • Dealing with premises and taxi licensing matters including attending the Council’s licensing committees, working groups and briefing to give professional advice to Officers and Elected members
  • Provide support and supervision to a Litigation Lawyer

About you:

To be successful in securing this position you will:

  • Be a qualified solicitor, barrister, or legal executive with up-to-date practicing certificate 
  • Possess demonstrable experience of working in litigation law, any additional experience of other areas of the law (Property, Planning, Contracts or Corporate Governance) would be beneficial
  • Be an excellent negotiator, with first rate communication skills at all levels of seniority
