Our client is a well-established and respected manufacturer of fixtures, fittings and components both mechanical and electronic in the home and building infrastructure products sector. Highly acquisitive and experiencing excellent growth, the company is based in a brand-new office, distribution centre and test centre complex in the West Midlands close to the M6/M54 but has operational facilities and subsidiaries nationally and globally.

As a result of growth, they are now seeking to strengthen their Technical and Quality function with the appointment of an Engineering or Science degree educated Customer Quality Engineer. You will report to the Head of Quality focussing on resolutions of customer complaints in a systematic way. Our client is developing a new, best in class and professional quality function to replace a traditional inspection, complaints based approach. The focus is on implementing a completely new "right-first-time" culture based on a proactive approach utilising defined processes, measurement, controls, accountability, and analysis of risk, best practice, continuous improvement and modern quality methodologies.

The Role:

  • To develop, implement and continually improve the quality management systems and drive operational quality activities related to third party sourced and in house manufactured products, that will result in zero defects internally and externally.

  • To deliver product quality improvements throughout the entire product range.

  • Managing quality management planning for new product introduction, including specification and inspection documents and driving FMEA (Failure Mode Effect Analysis) processes.
  • Train Quality Inspectors, operators and supervisory management to follow Quality Inspection Instructions.

  • Prepare and perform QMS (Quality Management System) audits to ensure that all procedures and instructions related to the QMS are effective and adhered to.

  • Lead the management of customer complaints, from initial receipt acknowledgement, through containment and corrective action, to resolution, including on-site support, where appropriate, using 8D methodology. To include remotely facilitating and coordinating 8D activities with overseas sourcing operations and supply chain.

  • Provision of support to the sourcing team for evaluation and qualification of new suppliers, or continuous improvement activities of existing suppliers.

  • Track and prepare monthly reports for internal and external quality performance metrics.

  • Support Production Engineering in process development, equipment selection, and process flow activities in the manufacturing operation.

  • Undertake Design and Process FMEA studies

  • Prepare Product Quality Plans & associated documentation

  • Product corrective and preventative action reports

The Ideal Applicant:

  • Science/Engineering/Design professional educated to HNC/HND or Degree level.

  • Experience of Mechanical and Electrical/Electronic Engineering.

  • At least 3 years’ experience in Quality related preferably Product Quality Engineering, position.

  • Proficient with FMEA process and facilitation. Ability to read CAD / technical drawings.

  • Lean Six Sigma qualifications would be highly advantageous.

  • Candidates will be Certified Quality Management Auditors with extensive experience of performing internal and external audits

  • Experience leading problem-solving processes and use of basic quality tools.

  • Excellent team working & verbal and written communication skills.

  • Direct customer facing experience essential - this could be external customers or internal customers within different product or manufacturing divisions of the same organisation.

  • Experience of creating and presenting reports on Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Previous experience of 8D problem solving, APQP or similar methodologies and knowledge of a risk based approach to product quality engineering techniques.

  • Practical experience of quality improvement techniques and an extensive knowledge of ISO9001 will be prerequisites.

  • You must be highly professional and confident, with the ability to facilitate, challenge, influence and inspire colleagues at all levels.

  • Your style will be hands-on and you will lead by example through excellent relationship presentation and communication skills whilst also being a true team player.
