What a Process Improvement Engineer will be doing at DS Smith…

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Process Improvement Engineer will lead initiatives and activities within the manufacturing areas.

The list below is not exhaustive of the responsibilities of the Process Improvement Engineer:

• Supporting continuous improvement events resulting in employee skill and knowledge development and KPI performance improvement. Tools & Techniques used (not exclusive):
o Workplace Organisation (5S & Visual Management)
o Waste Elimination
o Set-up Reduction (SMED)
o Work Balance and Standardised Work
o Root Cause Analysis Problem Solving (DMAIC)
o Ability to spot opportunities
o Asset excellence
• To be accountable for own health and safety whilst at work, operating in line with company procedures to enable a safe working environment
• To raise any unsafe acts seen immediately with individual(s) concerned and immediate reporting of health and safety incidents to management using behavioural safety cards (Observation Cards)
• Coordinate daily improvement activities to ensure continued. reduction of the seven (LEAN) wastes
• Promote lean manufacturing principles (TPM, SMED, 5S, DMAIC, improvement teams)
• Take an active role and eventually lead improvement meetings
• Updating the site’s KPI boards
• Collect data and report back via the Performance Management System structure
• Motivating, organising and encouraging teamwork within the workforce
• Having a clear understanding of the company's policies and values
• Support the development of a culture which promotes daily problem elimination, whilst devising and implementing improvements to systems, methods and procedures
• Develop employees through awareness programmes of the Lean Toolkit
• Measure and provide key metrics for both internal and external customers
• Promote Root Cause Analysis as a daily tool
• Support the sites Operational Excellence Programs

What we would like our candidate to have…

• Graduate Calibre or similar through experience/vocational qualification
• Six-sigma Green/Yellow Belt or equivalent
• Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing/Six Sigma tools and techniques
• A3 problem solving
• 5S
• Data analysis
• Strong IT skills with a good knowledge of Microsoft Office applications i.e. Word, Excel and PowerPoint, with a strong emphasis on Excel
• 2 years working knowledge within a continuous improvement team
