Job Title: Occupational Therapist

Band: Band 7

Location: River House, Bethlem Royal Hospital

Ward/Dept: Occupational Therapy Team

Hours: 37.5Hrs / 9am-5pm / Monday-Friday (Can be Flexible)

Within this role, you will provide clinical leadership to the Acute (A2) pathway wards (Norbury, Thames and Spring) as the lead on the planning, coordination and delivery of Occupational Therapy assessment and interventions within the Acute wards.

Thames Ward is a medium secure, forensic acute admission ward in River House, at Bethlem Royal Hospital. Thames ward is where everyone is first admitted to at River House to determine what treatment and care they need within the unit. Norbury Ward is a medium secure inpatient psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU) in River House at Bethlem Royal Hospital. This ward provides psychiatric assessment, treatment and care for men, aged 18-65, who have a history of offending behaviour. On this ward you will work closely with teams of health and social care professionals throughout the hospital, including psychiatrists, mental health nurses, social workers, occupational therapists and psychologists nursing and psychology. Lastly, Spring Ward is a forensic service in River House Medium Secure Unit at Bethlem Royal Hospital that provide assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and care for women, aged over 18, who have a range of mental health problems.

The South London & Maudsley NHS Trust provides a full range of mental health services to people of Southwark, Lewisham, Lambeth and Croydon as well as substance misuse services for people in Bexley, Greenwich and Bromley. The Trust provides specialist services to people from across the UK.

It has approximately 4,800 staff and a budget of £300 million. The trust also works closely with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN), King's College London and are part of King's Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre. There are very few organisations in the world that have such wide-ranging capabilities working with mental illness. Their scope is unique because it is built on three major foundations: care and treatment, science and research, and training.

Key Responsibilities

  • To ensure service users recovery goals and plans are at the centre of Occupational Therapy practice and fosters skills and confidence of people to enable them to live as independently as possible.
  • To have an element of clinical input through group work or individual complex cases. Using evidence based / client centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate occupationally focused interventions for adults within the acute stage of their illness.
  • To evaluate occupationally focused interventions across the Acute pathway, and particularly for adults with severe volitional challenge.
  • To provide specialist advice on the assessment and intervention of clients’ occupational needs within the Acute pathway and across the inpatient services as clinically indicated.
  • To take the lead in monitoring, development and evaluation of the necessary standards to ensure high quality, evidence based and cost-efficient service provision.
  • To work as part of a Multi Professional Team providing care for patients in the Acute Forensic pathway.
  • To provide profession specific supervision to Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapy technicians and Activity practitioners, so as to monitor and implement professional standards of practice including input to staff appraisal and continuing professional development.
  • To provide guidance on Occupational Therapy Models of practice such as MOHO, Ayre’s Sensory integration and have knowledge of working within forensic services.
  • To liaise with other Occupational Therapy colleagues across BDP in and establish systems that promote effective communication and best access to relevant services.
  • To provide clinical leadership for junior staff and students through supervision and training
  • To support placement education and placement educators in taking OT students on practice placement.
  • To provide training and consultancy for occupationally focused interventions within the Directorate.
  • To act as a resource for the BDP leadership, deputise when necessary and carry out delegated duties and projects as requested.

To be successful in applying for this role you will need:

  • HCPC registration
  • Degree in Occupational Therapy
  • 2 years post reg experience working with MH service users at Band 6 Level
  • Adult Mental Health and Forensic experience is mandatory

In addition to experience, all Qualified roles will be required to provide evidence of:

  • Relevant Qualifications
  • Registration with the relevant Registration Body if applicable.
