Job Purpose Summary
To provide engineering function reporting to the Machine Shop Manager, to ensure the
relevant Cell produces products for a regular product or project on time.
To be responsible for producing jigs, fixtures, methods and tooling for the production cell, to
enable the cell to produce on time products.
Develop expertise in the function, operation and capacity of existing tooling/equipment to
identify process time improvement, reduce downtime, increase quality and efficiency.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
To ensure that the Cell has up to date travellers, drawings and parts lists.
To ensure that the Cell has up to date time and output targets for all processes and that
tooling and engineering solutions are available on time.
To ensure all CNC machines are loaded and operating during all shifts.
To identify tooling and process changes which may be necessary to enable the Cell to
achieve its cost, delivery and quality targets.
To ensure most machining can be done in house through effective use of jigs, pallets or
other fixtures enhancing machine utility.
To produce tooling budgets and monitor the tooling spend against the budget.
To produce products within the Cell, according to the requirements of the Company, using
the Master Operational Plan (MOP) or project schedule, and to ensure these products meet
the required quality level and are produced within the time allowance.
The Engineer’s role in this is to provide timely inputs to the Cell, drawings, travellers,
tooling, processes, engineering support, parts & material, by co-ordinating activities with
Design & Purchasing functions within the business, and by working closely with the Cell
Leader, Supervisors and Managers.
To communicate with Design and Procurement resources to ensure they meet the needs of
the Cell, and to effectively communicate with the Cell Leader, Supervisor or Manager to
ensure the MOP requirements are achieved or surpassed.
To actively seek guidance from other areas of the Company, to fully understand and be able
to execute all associated processes and technologies required for the successful production
and testing of products within the Cell.
Planning & organisation
To contribute to the Cell by ensuring the right tools, equipment, & processes are available to
execute the requirements of the MOP.
To ensure that all documentation, travellers and drawings, are available to the Cell at the
right time, according to the MOP or schedule issued by the Machine Shop Manager. New
travellers will be written by the Engineer. Drawings will be produced by a Design
Draughtsperson; sometimes the Engineer will be responsible for producing drawings or
sketches, particularly for tooling or items required quickly on a project.
Being fully competent in all methods & measurements of processes within your Cell you will
provide support, as required, to all personnel on technical issues that relate to the activities
within the Cell. As an Engineer, you will be frequently asked to provide support for other
areas of the Company, and this will mean you will report functionally (i.e. on a day-to-day
basis) to the relevant manager from this other area of the Company. He/she will measure
the success of the delivery of this support as it will be used to measure your performance, in
addition to the measurements of your performance by the Machine Shop Manager.
To provide accurate and timely cost information, e.g. process times, materials spend.
To carry out staff training in key processes and engineering techniques to ensure the people
within the Cell can correctly execute the requirements of the MOP in terms of methods,
quality and time.
