Please note - This LSA role is a set in a very challenging context, it takes a long time to build trust with students. You might be there for 9 months and only then, start to make a break through with students who are vulnerable and have been tragically let down by the adult world.
Ideal role for an Aspiring Clinical, Education or Forensic, Psychologist. Roles will also appeal to psychology graduates interested in Social, Youth and Criminal Justice. Patience and Empathy are 2 huge skills needed in this role, this role will take months to have a positive impact on the students you work with. You need to ensure you have the right qualifications before embarking on an MSc.
This LSA role in a specialist SEMH school for boys and girls aged 9-16 that have excluded from their mainstream education. There will be a plethora of reasons why each boy is in the school, they will have suffered different traumas and all different contexts. It's a case of forming relationships with the boys, over time. You may help plant ideas that you will not see the full, positive effects or end results from, know that they are there and will happen.
Understanding the dichotomies, diversity and cultural effects on mental health in an area like Dorking, is vital to being able to have the stoic and durability nature to thrive in this role. Maintaining behaviour of the students, where possible and raising their academic achievement.
Sincerity is vital in this LSA role, you must know why you want to work with the boys. If you have had previous personal, family experience or support work experience as a graduate, this will give you a solid foundation.
Many of the students will be incredibly charismatic, your days will fly by quickly and you will not know where the day has gone. At the same token, in an environment where a lot of the student's Mental Health is incredibly vulnerable, you will have to be very patience and focus on the student's skills for life.

***Focus on enabling the boys to be able to go back into mainstream education
***Rehabilitation of students, understanding their traumas and what has led them to be excluded in the first place
*** Prepare, schedule, and deliver the Vocabulary Enrichment Intervention Programme for students with Speech, Language and Communication needs
***£80 per day, LSA role is for the academic year to July 2021, 8.15 to 16.15
***1-1 Literacy and Speech, Language and Communication sessions Provide pastoral support for vulnerable students in the Reintegration Service (Inclusion Unit), Support students with emotional or behavioural problems and develop their social skills
Education and Training provided online and within the school - Learning Support Assistant Mental Health Dorking
***You will be working with likeminded Criminology and Psychology Graduates, with similar objectives.
