The opportunity:

We have a great new role for a Head of Regional Broker Development to join the Markel team. The opportunity is for an experienced Business Development Leader to enable Markel to effectively bring this proposition to the broker community and drive awareness and engagement around our sector propositions to brokers and their clients. As part of the UK-wide broker development team, you will report to the Broker Development Director. We are open to location but the role will involve regular visits to our offices across the UK.

Markel serves the commercial insurance needs of SMEs, distributing through a range of channels including local, regional independent, strategic and global brokers, affinity groups and partner relationships, as well as on a direct to customer basis. We offer a range of sector specific insurance solutions across Professional and Management Risks, Social Welfare and Not for Profit, IT, Technology and Biomedical and Life Science sectors, Specialist & General Contractors and are committed to opening new sectors each and every year.

We operate a multi-channel focused sales structure including Broker, Direct and Affinities & Partnerships, with the broker channel ultimately reporting into the Divisional Director Broker Channel. The role of Head of Regional Business Development is to underpin the development and growth ambition Markel has for the UK insurance market and bring to the broker population a clear understanding of the unique and 'challenger' status of Markel's UK SME offering.

We have an expert underwriting capability, a commitment to the highest levels of customer service and want to pay claims - for Markel this is standard. Our brand identity realises itself in the SME Insurance space because of the way we build a package relevant and value adding support services specific to our customer's needs - which comes as standard for all of our customers. No provider in the UK has our unique approach and in house capabilities.

What you'll be doing:

  • Help achieve the growth plans by identifying brokers who have business in our product sectors and lead the business development team to achieve agreed new business goals
  • Work with brokers across the UK to develop a robust pipeline of new opportunities and deliver a robust subject area. Follow up to ensure we lead them across the portfolio of products and services they have with Markel
  • Handle all aspects of the broker relationships to ensure they deliver growth
  • Understand via knowledge transfer the Markel propositions and engage with the Broker market to increase sales revenues
  • Demonstrate a high level of sales professionalism and discipline through timely and accurate activity reporting, maintenance of CRM and documentation of meetings
  • Implement defined sales development meetings with our brokers to achieve the strategy

Our must haves:

  • Demonstrable experience in a previous business development role within insurance is essential
  • We are looking for challenging, motivated and success oriented individuals who bring expertise and a desire to build a market leading business
  • Able to demonstrate strong sales leadership capabilities
  • Experience of leading a business development team and within a defined sales process
  • Ability to implement a sales strategy to produce increased opportunities and the targeted results required
