An excellent opportunity has arisen for an Groundsperson to join a close estate team on a beautiful private property in Central Dorset, on a full-time basis.

The rural property is situated in a beautiful location, approximately 20-miles from the Dorset coast.  The historic main house is surrounded by formal gardens with parkland, mature trees and managed paddocks beyond.  Within the estate a small team of staff ensure the smooth running of the grounds, of which the successful applicant will play an integral part. The 100-acre estate houses a variety of formal gardens including ornamental bedding, borders and lawns, a glasshouse, walled vegetable garden, a swimming pool, 2 lakes’, an orchard and mature trees throughout. 

The Groundsperson will play an important role in assisting with the smooth running of the estate while working closely alongside the wider team.  The Groundsperson will have weekly meetings with Estate Manager with Monthly meetings with Owners. Team breaks 10-10.30am – also an opportunity to discuss anything. Areas of Responsibility include:

Woodland management

  • Nursery establishment & maintenance
  • Tree planting
  • Clearance and removal of dead trees in park bar ones left on purpose.
  • Supply house with seasoned logs and kindling.
  • Check tree guards.
  • Water young trees with bowser in drought
  • Maintenance of tractors and mowers, chain saws and strimmers
  • Mole, squirrel and vermin control

Lake maintenance

  • Check levels daily, keep streams flowing by removing weed & debris.
  • Riverbank management

Drives & Paths

  • Keep drive looking smart, clearing leaves and picking up.
  • Keep paths clear especially around the river walk and lake.

Grass Management

  • Mowing and clearing grass approx 2.5 days in summer
  • Scarifying and upkeep of lawns
  • Strimming

Maintenance of fields

  • Harrowing, rolling and spraying thistles and nettles
  • Keep water troughs clean
  • Fence repairs

Other jobs/interchangeable with others i.e. when Houseman is on holiday.

  • On a daily basis you would be responsible for locking up and opening the stables and coach house. PLUS setting alarm before leaving.
  • On Friday’s wind stable clock
  • Filling of petrol cans on account at Garage
  • Recycling & Rubbish (Monday) interchangeable with others when on holiday
  • Opening of shutters in the house
  • Filling of log baskets
  • Bottles, plastics and paper recycling
  • Occasional moving of furniture in the house
  • Attending as car parking and security attendant when the gardens are open maybe 2/3 times a year.

General Approach: Clear communication with other members of the team e.g. work in hand, work outstanding and planning holidays.

Hours of Work:

07.30 am start, 10.00 to 10.30 Team Tea break (Break Room), 13.00 – 13.30 Team Lunch break (Break Room) and 16.30 Finish.

SALARY:  up to £28,000
