Location - Manchester
Type - Permanent - Full-time 36.5hours/week
Salary - £45K - £55K DOE + £330/month car allowance

Overview:

We are currently recruiting for an Electrical Design Engineer to join our client's team in Manchester. The electrical designer will work closely with and under the guidance of the lead electrical designer and will be responsible for providing technical and detailed design based upon conceptual documents as well as verbal briefs, load analysis. design development and tender documents.

Job Purpose:

  • Our client specialises in the design and construction of sophisticated environmental facilities; providing a complete turnkey package to the high technology industries, particularly Pharmaceuticals, Fine Chemicals, Biotechnology, Food, Electronics and Nuclear industries. Our clients operate in highly regulated industries and therefore the service we offer must be always delivered in compliance with relevant standards.
  • This role will provide design activities to various Company clean rooms, production & research facilities, and general buildings.
  • The role will interface with the estimating disciplines as well as the other members of the design team, subcontractors, and client representatives. The electrical designer will assist with producing electrical design drawings, calculations, schedules, and proposals for the design department.

Aims & Objectives:

  • To brief the estimating team on pricing requirements and provide sufficient design information to allow accurate and efficient cost plans to be developed.
  • Be able to manage a tender return ensuring all bid documentation is completed correctly and returned on time.
  • You could receive initial concept reports and briefs, or you could be interpreting a written URS / EIR for the works and develop it into a detailed and coordinated work package.
  • There will be governance and employers' requirements which will differ between the various markets and customers that you will need to understand and apply in your designs.
  • To work with the operations team to assist with programming and reporting, construction queries and technical assistance.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities:

  • Reporting to the Head of Design you will have responsibility for the electrical design aspects on all your assigned enquiries and projects, these can be split into specific stages:
  • Tender stage design and estimation
  • Preparation of RFIs to ensure clients' requirements are clarified and realised.
  • Complying with all latest building regulations, statutory authority legislation, best practices, and environmentally complimentary schemes.
  • Site surveys to determine existing building layouts and services to enable sketches, take offs, estimation, and quantifiable solutions to be produced.
  • Understand the Company Quality Systems, implement and promote.
  • Correctly interpret drawings, specifications, and manufacturers data for design purposes.
  • Assess buildability of the installation and provide proactive solutions where required.
  • Prepare cost plans with sufficient details of how the costs have been derived.
  • To maintain a close working relationship with Commercial, Engineering and Operations teams, ensuring cohesion in any new business venture.
  • Prepare proposal letter technical descriptions with annotations to present the solution.
  • Liaising with clients to capture and interpret the design brief.
  • Prepare energy reports and life cycle costs to accompany your cost plan and proposal.
  • To create electrical designs, calculations and schedules for Construction issue including cable calculations, discrimination studies, Isolux plots. - all within building services.
  • Post tender project design and co-ordination.
  • Prepare in collaboration with the design team a risk and opportunities register.
  • Report to your line manager on design production progress and deliverables to ensure the design function supports the construction phase and programme.
  • Liaising will all disciplines to ensure works are accurately coordinated without clashes.
  • Inspection of onsite installations and design certificate signoffs.

Duties:

  • Low Voltage power distribution design for building services.
  • Circuit protection with correct disconnection times in LV final distribution.
  • Lighting design with reflected ceiling plans, suitable uniformity, and coordination with HVAC
  • Lighting Controls.
  • Cable Calculations.
  • Containment sizing including consideration of de-rating.
  • Structured cabling with segregation.
  • Fire alarm design with BS5839 signoff.
  • Emergency Lighting design with BS5266 signoff.
  • Drawing markups, sketches, schematics to brief the CAD & 3D modelling department.
  • Schedule and BoM production.

Skills & Experience:

Essential

  • Engineering qualification to HNC level as a minimum. 
  • Trained in the BS7671 18th Edition Amendment 2.
  • Conversant with a wide range of electrical building service systems and equipment.
  • Building Management Systems and associated principles.
  • IT literate with a technical understanding of IT packages relevant to the role, such as Amtech, Relux / Dialux.
  • You will be highly organised with a keen eye for detail and take a methodical and planned approach.
  • High level of self-motivation, organisational ability, and drive to meet deadlines.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of BMS and EMS systems, m
