Discovery Biology Research Scientist

We are currently recruiting a Discovery Biology Research Scientist on behalf of one our clients, a chemical company based in Wiltshire. This is initially one year contract.

Job overview:

Discovery Biology aims to deliver compelling starting points that fuel the invention of active ingredients. This is a unique chance for a biologist who specialises in invertebrates to apply their expertise to propose, design and execute experiments to improve our understanding of these novel pesticides.

If successful, you will be part of a team using automated analysis of behaviour to understand the activity of pesticides. You will be working to develop, run, automate and scale up behavioural assays to meet the needs of our screening platforms. You will work closely with the Invertebrate Genetics team and the Insect Control Lead Generation team and will be part of a larger cross-functional project team working towards these goals.

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the digital innovation of invertebrate phenotyping via automated symptomology analysis.
  • Run semi-automated elegans behavioural assays.
  • Contribute to the development, validation, automation and scale-up of these assays.
  • Introduce new technologies, techniques, or ways of working to improve the productivity of existing projects/platforms.
  • Maintain awareness of key strategic project goals. Propose, design, and carry out appropriate experiments using invertebrates to achieve these goals.
  • Communicate with stakeholders on outcomes of experimental activities.
  • Train and assist other team members to run assays.
  • Maintain high standards of HSE compliance, which includes following all risk assessments, reporting of safety incidents and supporting the lab stewards community when requested.

Requirements:

  • Must have a degree/PhD in a relevant science discipline. Appropriate technical science background is critical.
  • Must have worked with model or pest invertebrates. Experience with elegans is desirable.
  • Experience with behavioural analysis would be desirable.
  • Experience with the automation and scale up of assays would be desirable.
  • Experience with programming in Python would be desirable.
  • Excellent note keeping and organisational skills.
