AWE has exciting opportunities for Civil & Structural Engineers to come and join our Blast Damage Assessment Team. We have opportunities for both graduate level and experienced engineers to come and work with a highly experienced, multi-disciplinary team to analyse the effect of blast waves on buildings and infrastructure.

This is an excellent opportunity to be involved in some unique and exciting work!

Location:Aldermaston, West Berkshire. We are located between Reading and Basingstoke, with onsite parking.

Package: £31,000 - £46,000 (depending on your suitability, qualifications, and level of experience)

Closing Date: 31st May 2024

The Team

You will be working in the Damage Assessment Team. This multi-discipline group provides operational effectiveness and weapons effects assessments to AWE and our government stakeholders, and contributes a range of capabilities in support of the UK's national nuclear security.

We undertake fundamental research to understand complex blast wave propagation and the associated structural response. We utilise a range of disciplines including engineering, mathematics, remote sensing and computational physics in order to provide operational analysis capability to our customer community.

What will you be required to do?

  • Participate in the research and development of appropriate tools to predict the response of structures subject to blast loading. This includes running and developing high fidelity structural models as well as reduced order models.

  • Utilising state-of-the-art supercomputers to understand complex blast effects through fluid dynamics simulations and structural analysis.

  • Identifying possible structural designs with limited information using associated design guides.

  • Validation of modelling approaches through investigation of existing damage data as well as participation in experimental trials.

  • Present your work at stakeholder meetings, conferences and support external collaborations in the UK and overseas.

What will you need to be considered?

Ideally, you will have a proven track record of working in multi-discipline teams, making sound technical judgments, and delivery of technical research. You will also be able to work with and positively influence others. You should be proactive in your professional development and delivery focussed.

Having demonstrable knowledge of one of the following is essential:

  • Non-linear static and dynamic analysis.

  • Structural design (steel, concrete or masonry) to industry standards.

To be considered for the role, you must have a degree or equivalent level of experience working in a relevant STEM area.

A specialism in one or more of the following areas would be advantageous:

  • Finite element modelling including explicit dynamics and high strain rate effects.

  • Seismic analysis of buildings.

  • Geotechnical engineering.

  • Analytical or experimental research methods.

An understanding of blast engineering and protective structures would also be beneficial. Experience of working with modern programming languages would be desirable as would experience in one or more structural analysis tools (such as SAP2000, OpenSees, LUSAS or similar).

What will you get from us?

AWE has a range of benefits to suit you, including:

  • 270 hours of annual leave (inc. bank holidays).

  • Working a 9-day fortnight, employees have every other Friday off work.

  • Consideration for flexible working arrangements so that your work may fit in with your lifestyle. Please let us know if you wish to work part time.

  • Maternity Leave - 39 Weeks Full Pay & Paternity Leave - 4 Weeks Full Pay.

  • Support in initial and continued professional development (IPD and CPD), for a number of Professional Engineering Institutions (incl. ICE and IStructE), with AWE's PEI accredited Professional Engineering Development programme.

  • Training and development on state-of-art software and bespoke toolsets and platforms both on the job and through external training courses.

  • Employee Assistance Programme and Occupational Health Services

  • A generous defined contribution pension (we pay between 9% & 13% of your pay depending on your contribution)

  • Life Assurance

  • Discounts - access to savings on a wide range of everyday spending.

  • Special Leave Policy including paid time off for volunteering, public service and caring for your family.

Important things you need to know:
