Carpenter/Joiner

A full time, permanent position has arisen, at Charterhouse School, for an enthusiastic and motivated Carpenter / Joiner.

Charterhouse is one of the great historic schools of England that occupies a magnificent site of 250 acres on the outskirts of Godalming.

The School is looking for a Carpenter / Joiner to work efficiently and professionally to deliver an excellent service to the Estate department and wider School community. This is a wonderful opportunity to work in an environment that has a wide range of buildings and interior finishes from late Victorian to modern day architecture.

The successful applicant will be a reliable and trustworthy team player who will have the ability to work on their own initiative, with minimal supervision whilst adhering to appropriate Health & Safety Regulations.

The salary will be circa £32,500 per annum dependant on skills and experience

Main Duties

  • To ensure that day to day maintenance and project works orders are completed to a high-quality standard within the designated timescales.
  • To carry out all aspects of site and maintenance carpentry and joinery works using a variety of materials including solid grade laminate and plastics. This includes (but is not limited to) first fix such as fitting floorboards, staircases and window frames, second fix such as installing skirting boards, door surrounds, doors and shelving, ironmongery and locks and final fix works, kitchen and bathroom fits and fitted furniture.
  • To undertake repairs and maintenance of existing fixtures and fittings alongside a requirement to fit new and replacement fixtures as required.
  • To work on projects which may involve fully refurbishing and fitting suites of rooms and buildings either in the domestic or commercial property portfolio.
  • To carry out other non-carpentry tasks, as may be required from time to time by the Fabric Maintenance Manager and other Estates Department Managers.
  • To work in a safe, clean, and tidy manner around pupils, support staff and general public and generally protect the fabric of the school buildings.
  • To report maintenance issues and assist other trades as required.
  • To work within relevant Health & Safety requirements including COSHH, PUWER and working at height.
  • To report Health & Safety concerns to the Lead Joiner or Fabric Maintenance Manager.


To fulfil the above tasks, you will be required to:

  • Possess the relevant and current qualifications to enable competency to a suitable trade skill level.
  • Possess the relevant level of site experience and workshop production in order to carry out the variety of carpentry and joinery work required including bench work
  • Have a good understanding of relevant Health & Safety including NIC Regulations.
  • Be able to work closely with department colleagues and various trades to ensure that work orders are processed effectively.
  • Be able to plan ahead to ensure future work is planned and completed efficiently and within agreed timescales.
  • Obtain materials and arrange all necessary access to undertake tasks in a timely and professional manner.
  • Conduct Risk Assessments and COSHH assessments necessary for the performance of tasks and to operate machinery and equipment appropriate to those tasks.
  • Ensure the Lead Joiner and Fabric Maintenance Manager are kept aware of work progress and of any problems that may arise.
  • Ensure proper communication with and the flow of information back to all members of the School community where required.
  • Select, manage and maintain equipment and tools (including power tools) as required to complete the relevant tasks
  • In addition, you are required to complete the relevant tasks:
  • Keep vehicle and work areas clean and tidy.
  • Abide by and participate in Charterhouse’s Health and Safety policy.
  • Undertake suitable training to enable the safe and effective use of equipment supplied to be able to undertake the proper performance required.
  • The work may from time to time involve working at heights (training will be given), working in confined spaces and the use of specialist access equipment.
  • May be required to work in properties off campus including Edgeborough Prep School.

Other Responsibilities

  • This role will include a proportion of emergency 'on call’ cover throughout the year.
  • There will be a requirement to work on 'Carthusian Day’ for which an overtime payment will be made.
  • Some occasional weekend and special event work will be necessary from time to time for which overtime will be paid.
  • It will be a requirement to attend any School emergency situations as and when requested.
  • To undertake any other duties which from time to time may be necessary.
  • Holiday will not be allowed for the last full week of the School’s summer holiday period. Odd days may be taken, subject to approval.

Working Hours

Normal working days are Monday to Friday (08:0-16:30), with 30 minutes for lunch (unpaid) throughout the year. A willingness to be flexible in working hours is essential and the post holder will be required to join the 'out of hours’ call out team.

Working in a School environment, the jobholder is responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for whom they are responsible or with whom they come into contact and are expected to adhere to and ensure compliance with the School’s Safeguarding Policies at all times. If, in the course of carrying out the duties of the post, the Job Holder becomes aware of any actual or potential risks to the safety or welfare of children in the School they must report any concerns to the School’s Designated Safeguarding Lead.
