A client of RULE is seeking talented individuals with a passion for all things commercial. This role is similar to that of a film producer: get the script, find the actors, finance the production with advertising and then hand pick the team to create it! For this reason, the role is extremely autonomous and requires a high level of maturity and work ethic.
The company is an award-winning publishing house in central London that produce papers/reports and supplements which are exclusively published into one of London’s most read broadsheets with a target audience of C-suite individuals. The company was founded on the idea that 'the intelligent mass still values focused, high quality commercial content which is produced professionally and presented to an extremely high standard’.
As a Business Development/Publishing Manager you will have full project manager style control of five prints per year with responsibility for the entire lifecycle - from idea to finished product.
Managing research - Investigating 'information gaps’ to find interesting report topics.
Acquiring revenue - Building your own pipeline and pitching high-level directors across all sectors.
Gaining Advertising - Pitching relevant companies to fill advertising space in the print.
Sourcing Writers - Finding journalists and relevant writers to produce the content.
Design Production - Final sign off on front page designs for your print from graphic design team.
Editorial Commissioning - You have the final say on these projects acting as the paper’s editor.
This role is extremely diverse and emphasis is placed mainly on acquiring revenue which means a heavy business development/sales swing on the daily activities alongside the creative elements.
What’s on offer?
- £35K basic salary - increased to £41K upon first promotion (on average after one year).
- Realistic OTE of £51K first year - top performers have earnt more (Record is around £80K)
- £1,000 raise in basic salary for every print which exceeds revenue targets.
- 17.5% commission first year, 20% once promoted (Generally after 12-14 months).
- 30% commission on high grossing prints (over £65K - average is £66.3K).
Previous sales experience is not a pre-requisite however 12 months + commercial experience is necessary. You must be a self-starter for this role as, after an initial training/shadowing period, you will be expected to work off your own back and be highly motivated.
- Superb communication skills in spoken and written English
- A demonstrable and sustainable high level of energy and enthusiasm
- Interest in current affairs/business/publishing
- Strong academic background; a Bachelor degree minimum from Top 30 university (Business/Management/Economics or research related degree preferable).
