The Opportunity

QBE Europe are excited to be recruiting an Assistant Underwriter to join our Construction and Engineering underwriting team in our London office. You will be recruited to support the team in underwriting business in accordance with the business plan and within delegated underwriting authority. This is the perfect opportunity for an engineering graduate looking to utilise their knowledge in the insurance industry.

The QBE Construction and Engineering team insure some of the largest contractors in the UK, along with offering specific insurance for large UK and European construction projects. We have an appetite to insure a wide range of risks across the construction sector, ranging from the construction of buildings, to the installation of machinery, through to heavier civil engineering works.

Your new role
  • Support the development of the business plan for the portfolio and ensure delivery of the plan.
  • Contribute and participate in all meetings, to share and develop strategy, knowledge, and best practice.
  • Adhere to underwriting standards, instructions, and good practice to minimise risk and maximise efficiency.
  • Ensure the recording and measurement of insurance risks, to ensure accuracy and good practice.
  • Establish strong relationships with stakeholders including customers, brokers, business partners and colleagues, to maximise influence and achieve business objectives.
  • Continually develop expertise and technical knowledge through identifying and implementing appropriate learning and development activities
  • Perform underwriting activities in accordance with all legal and regulatory requirements to ensure obligations are met
  • Develop knowledge of market dynamics and market cycles to be able to support business performance
About you
  • University graduate in Civil Engineering, building surveying, quantity surveying, ground engineering or a similar subject.
  • Construction industry experience preferred.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a team environment
  • Capability to analyse and interpret data
  • Intermediate level understanding of relevant software, including Excel and other departmental software packages.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of the construction industry would be beneficial
