Assistant Accountant

Our client is currently looking for an experienced Assistant Accountant to work effectively as part of the finance team to ensure accurate and timely processing of monthly management accounts and payroll. To provide effective supervision of the Purchase Ledger Administrator, Payroll Administrator and Finance Assistants and monitor cashflow to ensure the effectiveness of cash collection and control fixed asset accounting.

Main responsibilities:

  • Production of monthly management accounts to trial balance stage in accordance with Finance department agreed timescales. Preparing prepayments and accruals
  • Assistance in preparation of monthly nominal analysis
  • Preparation of daily bank reconciliations
  • Monitoring of cash flow and highlighting any potential issues to the Financial Controller
  • Responsibility for the Sales Ledger function including the production, checking, and distribution of invoices and dealing with queries and remittance matching
  • Supervision (and cover) of the Purchase Ledger Administrator, Payroll Administrator and Finance Assistants
  • Provide support to the payroll function
  • Ensuring the organisational capital expenditure policy is followed and an accurate and up to date asset register is maintained
  • Raising statutory payments to HMRC and NHS Pensions
  • Supervision of daily handling and administration of petty cash
  • Assistance with year-end audit schedules
  • NHS Pensions reconciliations
  • Dental patient charges reconciliations and issuing credit notes
  • To manage customer cash receipts and supplier payments and forecasts and ensure Debtor and Creditor days targets are achieved consistently
  • Staff Induction and ongoing training, appraisal and ongoing development for self and staff

Person Specification:

  • You will be required to work within the highest levels of confidentiality and discretion
  • Prompt time-keeping and attendance
  • Requirement to work flexibly within agreed working hours at the discretion of the management team and occasionally working outside contracted hours to meet business needs
  • Ability to plan and prioritise workload which can be unpredictable
  • Ability to work on own initiative
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to work with others and communicate effectively across teams

The successful candidate will develop and maintain appropriate channels of communication with customers to ensure cashflow is in line with agreed terms and to highlight any potential issues to the Financial Controller, work effectively as part of the finance team, develop and maintain appropriate channels of communication with other managers and provide cover for the team.

You will have proven experience of working within a finance department, including sales ledger, purchase ledger and general ledger functions, qualified to at least Level 2 AAT or be studying towards a full AAT or CCAB accountancy qualification. Experience of Sage 50/Sage Payroll, be used to working effectively as part of a team and have excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to deal confidently with managers and staff at all levels. You will also have good organisational and prioritisation skills, a professional and a confidential approach to responsibilities. You will be working for extended periods of time using a PC and computer, so concentration is a must. To plan and prioritise workload can be unpredictable so the ability to problem solve is essential.
