Apprentice Accounts Assistant

Beverley Building Society was founded in 1866 and is a major financial institution in the town. Today, the Society concentrates on its core services of mortgages and savings. Whilst primarily serving the East Riding of Yorkshire their mortgage and savings products are now available nationally.

  • Grade B or above in GCSE Maths and English or equivalent

  • A-Levels and/or Level 3 AAT (A-Level in Business and/or Accounting preferred but not essential)

  • Previous experience working in a finance department preferred but not essential

  • Good working knowledge of key Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Powerpoint, and Excel). In particular, a reasonably advanced knowledge of Excel (e.g. creating and using pivot tables) is required


  • Good verbal and written communication skills

  • Organised/able to deliver to deadlines

  • Proven analytical skills

  • Accuracy - works hard to ensure right first time

  • Flexible - will be involved in various ad hoc tasks

  • A passion to learn, and proven record of high academic achievement


Management Accounting

  • To assist in the preparation of the monthly management accounts as required.

Regulatory Reporting

  • Complete a number of the "basic" regulatory returns for review

Accounting Tasks

  • Produce daily reconciliation of transactions and control accounts for mortgages, shares, liquid assets and fixed assets

  • Maintain Society's Nominal Ledger

  • Involved in payroll process

  • Involvement in Faster Payments and CHAPs processing via RBS Bankline

  • Involvement in the maintenance of the purchase ledger and sales ledger day books

  • Update all excel expense analysis sheets for purchase invoices and cash back payments

  • Ensure correct recording of warrant payments and direct debit receipts


£12,000-£17,000 p.a. dependent upon level of experience and qualification.


23 days, plus bank holidays.


The successful candidate will be enrolled on a Level 4 apprenticeship in Accounting and Finance, allowing them to obtain a recognised qualification in the field (e.g. AAT Level 4, or ICAEW's CFAB). Study support will be provided by the Society throughout this process. Completion of the Level 4 apprenticeship can act as a route towards the subsequent attainment of chartered status.


Progression within the Finance team; increased responsibilities around production of financial management information, involvement in statutory financial reporting, and more complex areas of regulatory reporting.
