Summary We’re looking for a Volunteering & House Officer to join our team, working across Hinton Ampner and Uppark House & Gardens.
Working with volunteers and the house team, you’ll be making a vital contribution to the Trust’s cause of protecting and caring for places so that people and nature can thrive – now and into the future.  
The working pattern will be Sunday through to Thursday, 9.00am to 5.00pm, and some pre-arranged evenings for special events. This role is for a 11-month fixed term contract with the possibility to be made permanent. Internally you’ll be known as Volunteering & Community Officer.

You'll be part of our House team who work across Hinton Ampner in Hampshire and Uppark House & Gardens in West Sussex. Across both properties, the house team looks after 300 volunteers. Reporting to the Senior Collections & House Officer and working closely with the Senior Volunteering & Community Officer, you’ll look at the way the whole volunteer journey for the house volunteers, making a consistent approach to the way we work.

Working across both properties is a requirement of the role so the ability to drive is crucial.

What you'll be doing

As our Volunteering and House Officer, you'll be supporting the house team in reviewing the effectiveness of our volunteer systems and processes. You'll be working to create a flexible, positive and inclusive place for current and future volunteers to get involved, all whilst ensuring a consistent and high standard of opening the houses to visitors. You'll develop new ways of working and deepen relationships with existing and new volunteers and managing rotas to enable the house to consistently open rooms for our visitors to enjoy.

You’ll be managing volunteers through induction, and helping with any problems and questions. You’ll be working alongside the house team with the daily operations of opening the house including helping us to maintain presentation standards on our visitor route.

Part of your daily tasks will be helping the house team clean and maintain the house, keeping presentation standards to a high level and being trained on National Trust Housekeeping and conservation practices.

This role will also form part of the day duty management for the property.

Who we're looking for

  • experience of volunteer management
  • able to effectively communicate at various levels
  • able to deliver excellent customer service
  • flexible and collaborative, a team player who’s happy to lead on and work with other people’s agendas towards a shared goal
  • well-organised, with good attention to detail
  • basic understanding of conservation
  • willing to learn and understand duty management of two sites
  • comfortable using IT systems such as Microsoft Office
