This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions and Security Clearance is required.

The Role

The UNIX Systems Group, part of the Computing Division at UKAEA, is integral to the technical design and delivery of UNIX systems, mainly running Linux and Solaris. Operating within the Enterprise Infrastructure Solutions Unit, this group actively supports application deployment, managing network infrastructure, security, server, storage, end-user computers, and device management. The Unix Systems Specialist, contributing to the Enterprise Infrastructure Solutions unit, plays a crucial role in designing, configuring and maintaining UNIX-based systems, ensuring seamless operations, and promptly addressing technical issues. This role is essential for managing system configurations and implementing project-related activities within the broader scope of the Computing Division's responsibilities.

Additional Responsibilities:

- Manage Linux-based systems, including HPC clusters, general purpose server running core infrastructure and cloud based systems
- Lead Linux system-related projects
- Maintain Linux systems configuration through configuration management systems
- Maintain and configure UNIX based storage systems
- Develop and manage OS and application configurations, along with a consistent configuration management system across all managed machines
- Ensure timely application of patches, updates, firmware, and security fixes, maintaining system integrity and minimising vulnerabilities
- 2nd and 3rd level support for Linux systems

Qualifications
Essential Requirements:

- A degree in a relevant STEM subject or equivalent experience
- Significant knowledge of the Linux Operating System
- Significant practical experience managing Linux Systems in a Research Environment
- Significant experience with configuration management tools such as CFengine or Ansible
- Experience in using version controls systems, i.e. git or svn
- Good understanding of current network protocols
- Good interpersonal and communication skills

Desirable Requirements:

- Experience of cluster schedulers such as SLURM
- Experience in preparing technical aspects for procurements
- Experience in managing Unix systems other than Linux
- Experience in managing Linux systems at scale
- Experience in managing technical projects
