Safe World Insurance Group (UK) Ltd is a niche insurance company based in Lancashire. They specialise in Deposit Protection Insurance and Insurance Backed Guarantees for the UK home improvement industry, which is sold through insurance intermediaries, or purchased by several recognised consumer protection schemes.

They began underwriting policies in 2018 and are one of the only UK based specialist underwriters of these products, with over a million policyholders, growing year on year. Our team has considerable experience in the home improvement industry and "Insurance Backed Guarantee" market, and we aim to continue building on our unique position in this market.

Role Purpose

The Head of Underwriting will be responsible for the implementation of the Board’s underwriting strategies both internally and within the broker network.

You will contribute towards the delivery of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) through monitoring the performance of the brokers offering our policies. This will include, control of underwriting standards, business development activity, and ensuring that business written is done so in a technically excellent, adhering to the underwriting authority and standards.

You'll also have a firm grasp of products in your line of business, the insurance market, and the changing competitor landscape.

Longer term you will develop a small underwriting team, with underwriters based in our Brokers offices to provide underwriting support.

Principal Accountabilities:

· Manage the Company's Underwriting and Pricing strategy.

· Provide fair and balanced underwriting decisions using the appropriate amount of evidence necessary.

· Assess risks that sit outside the standard risk’s brokers can accept, without referral, under the ToBA.

· Analyse loss information, and broker and product profitability.

· Broker and ToBA relationship management.

· Monitor and interpret statistical data, including identification of trends, influences and anomalies on a case-by-case and local account basis.

· Support the business planning and forecasting process; monitor financial exposure within outlined limits; Maintain awareness of all claims advised while supporting and providing input on settlement of claims.

· Maintain underwriting documentation/files; keeping all documentation in order.

· Work with the wider team to develop requirements for statistical and insightful reports for the underwriting function.

· Support the business in the identification, design and implementation of potential new markets, products, and pricing.

Desirable Skills

  • Proven technical underwriting skills ideally within the general insurance market, such as property, home improvement, construction, broker markets.
  • Excellent trading skills and a confident negotiator.
  • Strong ability to build, develop, and maintain broker relationships.
  • Achievement orientated, able to organise own workload to meet tight deadlines and with a positive attitude.
  • A good team player - supportive of others with an enthusiastic and positive attitude
  • Confident and engaging communication skills with the ability to challenge and influence others.
  • ACII qualified or progression towards
  • Full working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • A positive "can do" attitude
