The opportunity:

We have an exciting opportunity for an Underwriter to join the Markel team in Birmingham. You will be a member of a small but successful team dealing exclusively with new business via brokers and our E-trade system. The role reports to the Head of Broker Connect within New Business Sales. The successful candidate will be responsible for underwriting new business within Financial Lines, building trading relationships and managing their own workflow.

What you'll be doing:

  • Provide and maintain a good level of underwriting and demonstrate a detailed knowledge of company guidelines, products and authority levels
  • Review broker-generated submissions and quotes and encourage brokers to place the business with Markel by highlighting our product benefits and negotiating terms
  • Maintain new and existing broker relationships through regular development meetings in conjunction with the Head of Broker Connect and Business Development Managers
  • Handle workflow from enquiry receipt to outcome through the Markel workflow platforms
  • Proactively seek new business prospects utilising the CRM system accordance with the CRM Working Practices guide

Our must haves:

  • Previous experience underwriting or broking experience within Financial Lines, Professional Indemnity, Commercial Combined underwriting and/or underwriting portfolios and binders
  • Ability to prioritise and de-prioritise work based on broker relationship and product profitability
  • Good communication skills and past experience with dealing with clients by email and telephone
  • Have previous experience with proactively managing own workflow
  • Strong team mate
