As a Senior Underwriter, you will be responsible for managing a team of Underwriters and Assistant Underwriters and overseeing the renewal underwriting process. Your expertise in evaluating risk, analysing policy renewals, and maintaining broker relationships.

In addition, your strong leadership, and people management skills will be crucial in guiding and developing a high-performing team.

The role will include a product suite consisting of commercial combined, property owners, retail package, primary liability, excess liability, contract works, contractors’ plant and equipment

Responsibilities

  • Renewals underwriter renewing approximately 75 renewals per month (Commercial Combined,

Property Owners, Retail Package, General Liability, Contractors Liability)

  • Lead and manage a team of Underwriters and Assistant Underwriters, providing guidance,

coaching and support to ensure the team professional growth and success.

  • Maintain premium income per binder in line with projections and company strategy.
  • Developing broker relationships to become a key referral point for brokers.
  • Identifying renewal threats and assist handlers on renewal strategy
  • Ensure compliance with best practice procedures (processes and timescales)
  • Review and update renewal template letters to brokers (invitations and document issuing)
  • Filter referrals to insurers
  • A technical referral point, for the renewals team
  • Set performance goals, conduct performance appraisals, and provide constructive feedback to

enhance individual and team performance.

  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture, promoting effective communication knowledge sharing and teamwork.
  • Oversee induction and peer review for new starters.
  • Conduct one to one monthly peer review with each renewal’s handler.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with your broker panel.
  • Monthly reporting
  • You will be expected to perform to the highest of standards and in accordance with the Conduct Rules as specified by the FCA. The Conduct Rules are as follows:

o You must pay due regard to the interests of customers and treat them fairly.

o You must observe proper standards of market conduct.

Experience & Knowledge

  • Commercial underwriting experience is essential, specifically Property and Liability, ideally in all or some of the products mentioned above.
  • Exceptional leadership and people management skills, with a demonstrated ability to motivate and develop high performing teams.
  • Previous experience in setting clear goals and objectives, monitoring progress, and providing regular feedback and coaching to ensure team members’ growth.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to evaluate complex risks and make informed decisions.
  • Experience in dealing with Commercial brokers/ Insurers.
  • Experience working in a small team in SME organisations.
  • Experience in underwriting with delegated authority or underwriting licences
  • Proven track record of developing new and existing relationships with key brokers.
  • Ability to deliver on financial targets.
  • Ability to work in as a team and on own initiative.
  • Experience in using software systems for underwriting and administration.
