Job Title: Senior Trading Standards Officer

Location: Hackney, London

Contract: 3 months

Salary: £30/hr

We are currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join a local authority Trading Standards team as a Senior Trading Standards Officer. This role plays a crucial part in contributing to the achievement of the Mayor's priorities and the local authority's corporate objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct inspections and investigations, handle complaints, and prepare prosecution reports.
  • Undertake project work and execute tasks outside standard office hours as necessary.
  • Enforce a full range of trading standards and ancillary legislation allocated to the service unit.
  • Contribute to the development, maintenance, and promotion of the Council's policies on equal opportunities and community relations.
  • Engage in outreach work with communities and implement interventions to address behaviours impacting communities.
  • Support corporate quality initiatives, develop policies, and implement new systems and procedures.
  • Foster compliance through collaborative partnerships with businesses, focusing on prevention and compliance-building opportunities.
  • Report on relevant issues affecting the designated area to public meetings and working parties as required.
  • Provide guidance and support to colleagues and subordinates.
  • Maintain accurate records and make returns as directed.

Requirements:

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to engage with individuals and groups at all levels.
  • Proficiency in explaining main offences and controls under enforced legislation, using plain language and referencing relevant case law.
  • Ability to represent the team and colleagues, assess information, and recommend appropriate actions.
  • Understanding of quality assurance requirements and experience with EFQM preferred.
  • Experience providing comprehensive Home Authority Advice to various premises.
  • Familiarity with advising businesses, consumers, and other service users on criminal and civil law related to trading standards.
  • Capability to handle and transport heavy equipment and seized items safely, with assistance if needed.
  • Diploma in Consumer and Trading Standards (DCATS) or equivalent statutory qualification.
