Main Duties of the Job

You will:

  • Support the development of official statistics products in various digital formats ready for publication on UKHSA’s GOV.UK website
  • Create content on Whitehall Publisher: draft reports, landing pages, and collection pages, and submit content for review, ready for publication
  • Work collaboratively with statistics product leads and the wider team to develop statistical outputs that are engaging to the user and ensuring content remains aligned with user need
  • Maintain the official statistics release calendar for UKHSA outputs on GOV.UK, liaise with product leads to ensure outputs are pre-announced on Whitehall Publisher and published to those timescales (in keeping with the Code of Practice for Statistics)
  • Lead on the official statistics publications process end to end, flagging risks, issues or breaches of the Code with the Head of Profession for Statistics or other nominated statistics lead
  • Support the release of any ad hoc publications as and when required
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with product leads and digital content teams
  • Keep up to date on and use the Government Digital Service (GDS) style guide and other standards to design high quality, accessible content
  • Be an active member of the content design community, contributing to knowledge of best practices
  • Lead on a project to review our GOV.UK statistical content, focussing on improving user experience
  • Lead on other projects to support the longer-term improvement of our individual products, in line with our KPIs and in a way that is cognisant of our stakeholders wider priorities
  • Line manage a statistical publications designer (HEO), who will support on the above tasks

Essential Criteria:

  • Educated to degree level in a relevant subject or equivalent level of experience of working at a similar level in content design
  • Experience of writing for the web, with experience of planning, creating and publishing website content that is in plain English, accessible and usable, and meets organisational objectives
  • Using best practice in writing for the web including following a style guide (ideally GDS style)
  • Using a content management system to publish to the web (ideally Whitehall Publisher for GOV.UK publishing)
  • Experience supporting the end-to-end publishing process
  • Experience in improving user experience of digital content
  • Experience of developing strong and supportive relationships with stakeholders, using these relationships to help overcome resistance to change
  • Comfortable working to specific timescales and tight deadlines

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience of publishing high-profile content at short notice
  • Experience of using metrics and user feedback to define and refine content
  • Editing complex technical or scientific material into plain English
  • Knowledge of health protection issues, such as infectious diseases
  • Knowledge of official statistics pre-announcement and publishing requirements
