ASEND tuition supports SEND pupils and helps them continue their learning while they cannot access school or don’t have a school place. We are looking for a SEN Tutor with experience of supporting pupils with severe learning difficulties, autism and significant language impairments to create a stimulating communication rich environment for a 17 year old male pupil in Barnet.

What ASEND Tuition Is

We are looking for inspirational tutors to support children and young people with SEND in south Enfield. We support pupils with SEND who are not attending school for a number of reasons including Mental Health issues, or lack of a suitable school place. We aim to prepare them for a return to a school or college setting, and actively support our young people with preparation for adulthood.

We tutor pupils of all ages face-to-face within school times and in a range of settings including homes, schools, community centres and out in the community. Our tuition is completely pupil-focused and can target developing early learning, following an academic curriculum, providing emotional support or developing life skills. We need a wide range of tutors to support our pupils to meet their specific needs and ensure good progress. We work very hard to match each tutor with the pupils who can most benefit from their skills and expertise.

About The Pupil

ASEND is looking for an experienced SEND tutor for an Autistic 17-year-old young man in Barnet. He is a loving and gentle individual who forms strong connections with adults. However, he faces significant difficulties with communication and social interaction. Transitioning to a new school has not been easy for him, and he requires a supportive and understanding tutor to guide him through this journey again. A structured, low-stimulation learning environment with a visual timetable and a total communication approach is essential for his progress.

He can become distressed and overwhelmed. As a result he faces physical challenges, hindering his ability to cope effectively and has a desire to leave the stressful situation. The right tutor will have extensive experience working with students who may present such challenges when upset, and be able to create a safe, low arousal and nurturing learning environment for him to return to a place where he can re-engage. The tutor will be able to teach him self-calming skills to help with his anxiety. You will be joining a small team of specialist tutors who support other children with similar needs, meaning there will be opportunities for peer interaction and group work once your pupil is settled.

There may be occasions where the tutor will need to provide personal care. The ideal candidate will be comfortable with intimate care tasks, including cleaning up after accidents and providing hygiene support as needed. To maintain the pupil’s dignity we encourage male tutors to apply.

As our ideal candidate, you are not only passionate about education but also possess a deep understanding of ASD and the patience and empathy needed to support individuals like our pupil. You thrive in structured environments and have experience implementing visual timetables and other supportive tools. Most importantly, you are committed to making a positive impact on his life and helping him reach his full potential.

About you:

  • You’ll have experience with SEN: Autism, various forms of communication (symbols, pictures, gestures etc) and can calmly manage behaviours of concern

  • You may be an experienced special teacher with QTS, or another skilled practitioner who has experience of working with children in a therapeutic way

  • You’ll have a passion for helping pupils overcome any barriers to learning and difficulties with engagement

  • You’ll be good at building rapport and strong relationships with children and their families - we work closely with families to create a plan

  • You will be active and able to meet the physical demands of working with a fast, high energy teenager

  • Have the ability to motivate and inspire pupils

  • Use a person-centred approach in your work

  • Make the safety, wellbeing, achievement, and progress of your pupils central to everything that you plan and do

  • Have the determination and energy to bring about continuous improvement.

Benefits:

  • Generous and competitive rates of pay

  • Opportunities for professional development

  • Friendly support and guidance to enable you to meet the individual needs of learners and to ensure that you feel confident in your position

  • Training in working with children with SEND

  • Option to arrange work around the existing schedule

  • Join a friendly and supportive team

At ASEND you will always be well supported by our highly qualified and experienced team and well-remunerated for your work.
