About the Role:

As a Teaching Assistant in SEMH schools and Pupil Referral Units (PRUs), you will play a crucial role in creating a positive and supportive learning environment for students facing emotional and behavioral challenges. Your primary responsibilities will include:

  1. Supporting Students: Working closely with students on a 1:1 basis or in small groups, providing academic and emotional support.
  2. Behavior Management: Implementing strategies to manage challenging behavior, ensuring a safe and conducive learning atmosphere.
  3. De-escalation: Using effective de-escalation techniques to defuse tense situations and promote student well-being.
  4. Collaboration: Collaborating with teachers, SENCOs, and other professionals to develop tailored interventions and support plans.
  5. Assessment and Progress Monitoring: Assisting in assessing student progress and adapting strategies accordingly.

Requirements:

To be successful in this role, you should have:

  • Direct Experience: Previous experience working directly with students exhibiting challenging behavior in educational settings (SEMH schools, PRUs, or similar).
  • De-escalation Skills: Ability to de-escalate situations effectively and maintain a calm and supportive demeanor.
  • Empathy and Patience: A compassionate approach and patience when working with students facing emotional difficulties.
  • Teamwork: Willingness to collaborate with colleagues and contribute to a positive team environment.
  • Relevant Qualifications: While not mandatory, relevant qualifications such as a Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant qualification would be advantageous.
