Role information

We are looking for an individual with excellent knowledge of firearms and ammunition to include practical, legal, and technical experience. The role is to join a team delivering accurate advice to BASC members across a broad spectrum of firearms and ammunition related matters.

Key accountabilities and responsibilities

  • Provide BASC members with support and advice on any matters that have a bearing on the ownership and use of sporting and heritage firearms. This will be through day-to-day contact by telephone and e-mail correspondence, written articles, or personal meetings.
  • Carry out research as necessary to ensure that all advice provided is accurate and appropriate.
  • Support members in negotiation with the police to safeguard members’ firearm, shotgun, and dealership certificates as well as explosives licences. Use best endeavours to facilitate the return of members’ property where appropriate.
  • Monitor firearms licensing practices in the Northern region of England and UK-wide. Enter the results onto the membership records database.
  • Help to build relationships between BASC and the police firearms licensing community in northern England, including identification and resolution of licensing issues and the provision of training to police firearms licensing teams.
  • Represent BASC at external meetings with members, the police, the Home Office and other agencies, as required by the regional director.
  • Maintain contact with colleagues in BASC’s regional firearms team, director and head of firearms and BASC public affairs department, to ensure they are aware of key issues relating to firearms.
  • Represent the association at game fairs, BASC roadshows and similar events to provide specialist firearms advice, as required by the regional director.
  • Provide input to government consultations and changes in legislation where required by the director or head of firearms.
  • As member firearms enquiries, and related work allow, support the Northern region team with other duties as reasonably requested by the regional director. This is likely to include but is not limited to; providing advice and support to members on other shooting and conservation matters, attending site visits and events, and supporting delivery of training.
