Do you love being outdoors and working as part of a team, where no two days are the same? Do you want to develop new skills that could help with future job opportunities?  We’re offering the opportunity for a young person to work alongside our Ranger team delivering nature conservation in the South Downs. This is a grant-funded placement. The conditions of the funding are that we appoint a person aged 16-24.

This is a 6 month placement and you’ll be working 2 days per week, between Monday to Thursday. 

Proposed start date is Monday 24th June. For under 18’s this role will count as 15 hours of work, out of the 20 hours or more a week of working or volunteering that you can do whilst in part-time education or training.

What it's like to work here

This is an exciting opportunity to work in the spectacular landscape of the South Downs. Based at Saddlescombe Farm at the foot of Devil’s Dyke, you’ll be helping the Rangers with the day-to-day management of our countryside sites.    

It will be challenging and hard work, but there is a great Ranger team to support you and help you develop.? 

The Ranger team is based at Saddlescombe Farm, close to Devil’s Dyke near Brighton. You’ll need to be able travel to and from this site for work.

What you'll be doing

You’ll be helping the Ranger team with carrying out a range of practical habitat management tasks such as scrub clearance and mowing, as well as fencing and creating safe access to the countryside by repairing gates and stiles. 

You’ll be helping to protect our special places by carrying out wildlife surveys, as well as learning how to use a variety of tools and equipment. This role will also involve working with volunteers and community groups, as well as taking part in events to raise awareness about our important conservation work.

  • willing to work outdoors in all weathers
  • happy to spend the day walking across the Downs   
  • interested in learning about nature conservation  
  • keen to learn about different tools and machinery
  • a good communicator and able to work as part of a small team
