Product Engineer

Reports to:
Managing Director

Due to the onward development of one of our team members, we are looking for a well-rounded engineer to support the onward development of our innovative building performance measurement technologies – ranging from supporting and improving existing products to development and testing of new solutions.

The role:

A hands-on role, for a new team member, with experience across technical product development, which includes the application of mechanical design, electronics, embedded software, physics, maths, data science and the use of prototyping techniques such as building test rigs and 3D printing.

With a passion for technology and engineering, this post holder will become extensively familiar with the underlying science behind our products and how they are manufactured. With this knowledge, the role will support our customers and embrace their feedback whilst fundamentally seeking to continuously develop and improve our technologies in terms of mechanics, durability, the underlying science, buildability, functionality and so on.

Ideally, they will have experience with product development and testing. The role will cover electronics, pneumatics, sensor calibrations, and 3D printing so experience with this type of technology is highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Understand our products and conduct internal projects led by data insights and customer feedback to develop and improve aspects such as algorithms, hardware, electronics, and packaging. Complete the calibration of sensors and measurement equipment, and maintain any demo kit we hold, so it is ready to go.
  • Offer product enhancement recommendations, informed by failures or repairs, which lead to enhanced product features, functionality, and robustness.
  • Producing drawings, models and prototypes making use of our in-house 3D printer and workshop
  • Calibrate sensors and systems, test new products and support their onward development.
  • Compile, analyse and query datasets, informing the development of both the mechanical design and embedded software side of our products.
  • Offer customer support, including demonstrations and provision of training to individuals and small groups.
  • To share in responsibility for the day-to-day running of our workshop, ensure it is stocked, clean and a testimony to the work and products we provide.

Required Skills

  • Engineering, technology, or science-based degree or equivalent apprenticeship.
  • Proven experience in product assembly, maintenance, testing and repair.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills (demonstration or explaining products and services to non-technical or technical people).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Good understanding of the underlying physics and math behind the BTS products
  • Good understanding of mechanical aspects of our products inc. pneumatics, basic electrics/wiring looms, electronics, general product assembly and quality control.
  • At least basic programming skills – python, C# and .NET – in the interests of analysing datasets, development of our algorithms and updating of embedded software.
  • Competent in IT, importantly CAD, MS Excel and equivalent data analysis tools as well as word processing, email and presentation tools

Essential Attributes

  • Good communication skills and the ability to work alone as well as alongside others both internal and external to BTS.
  • Confident, and able to make suggestions, with the judgement to know when to work from own autonomy and when to seek support and input from the broader team.
  • Can do – self-starter, with the intellectual curiosity to find a way, or fail fast and learn quickly for a better way to do things.
  • Technical curiosity, wanting to explore and innovate the application of technology and engineering methodologies, to further enhance the products we develop.
