The Opportunity: An exciting period of change and growth is underway in areas such as planning, regeneration, and housing. We are seeking to appoint a new Planning Manager who will be pivotal in shaping and delivering high-quality developments, contributing to the new strategic plan, building new relationships, and supporting development in housing and regeneration.

This is a great opportunity for an individual to take a ‘step up’ in their career and join at a time where they can really influence the direction of the department and support strategic decision-making. This role is offered on a hybrid basis, requiring office presence for 2-3 days per week, with the flexibility to work from home otherwise.

Accountabilities:

  • Contribute to achieving corporate objectives and priorities.
  • Drive continuous improvement in service delivery and external performance assessments.
  • Ensure development management achieves the highest standards of design and placemaking.
  • Manage the Development Management and Enforcement Service, supporting the overall management of Development Services and corporate projects.
  • Provide professional advice on planning matters, upholding the highest standards of professional integrity.
  • Oversee all aspects of development management and enforcement services, ensuring compliance with legislation and policies.

Key Service Accountabilities:

  • Lead all development management and enforcement planning work, providing advice and guidance in line with policies.
  • Define and implement best practices, contributing to service plans, budgets, and monitoring.
  • Commit to professional development, staying informed on best practices, legislation, and current planning issues.
  • Input into the preparation of strategic planning documents and guidance.
  • Ensure effective decision-making processes, including training for committee members.
  • Analyze and interpret data, policy, and law, guiding the council’s approach.
  • Represent the council at external meetings, briefings, and consultations with stakeholders.

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Essential Planning Experience: Must have prior experience in Planning, obtained through work in either a local authority or the private sector.
  • Educational Qualification: A degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and knowledge.
  • Relationship Building: Capable of establishing positive and dynamic relationships with planning partners, complemented by excellent communication, advocacy, and negotiation skills.
  • Project Management: Outstanding project planning and management skills, with a proven track record of delivering projects successfully and the ability to handle multiple tasks within tight deadlines.

This role is integral to fostering strong internal working relationships and ensuring the successful implementation of the local plan. It offers a chance to be at the forefront of shaping the future of the community.
