Join The Woodmill as an Occupational Therapist Assistant and change the lives of The Woodmill is an 18 bed rehabilitation service for women with complex emotional and mental health needs.

Under the supervision of an Occupational Therapist, you will support the service in delivering structured activities and assisting in the planning for individual and group therapeutic interventions. You will build one-to-one rapports with service users to encourage participation in activities and empower recovery. 

As an Occupational Therapist Assistant, you will contribute to the assessment, monitoring, evaluation, and modification of structured activities in order to measure progression and ensure effectiveness. 

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will be supported regionally and will have access to a variety of training and online courses to support your career development and growth. 

As an Occupational Therapist Assistant, you will be:

  • To support the occupational therapists to manage their caseloads including facilitating meaningful interventions to patients both on and off the wards.
  • Carry a caseload of service users under the supervision of the occupational therapists.
  • To support the occupational therapists to facilitate assessments to identify the occupational needs of service users.
  • Plan and facilitate/co-facilitate group’s and one to one sessions, covering areas of self-care, leisure interests, vocational, domestic and social skills as directed by the occupational therapist.
  • Provide interventions that focus on promoting independence and meaningful social engagement, to meet the individual recovery needs of our service users.
  • Contribute to meetings and MDT discussions to ensure patients occupational needs are met.
  • To work collaboratively with service users and the MDT to develop patient-centred care plans.
  • Be able to interact with service users, their families, and other professionals and demonstrate excellent social skills including both verbally and non-verbally.
  • Develop knowledge of specialist equipment and support service users to use this equipment.
  • To produce a high standard of documentation including assessments, reports and clinical notes.
  • Be able to appropriately liaise with external professionals where necessary.
  • To support service users with their activities of daily living including managing their personal care and domestic tasks.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Evidences a keen interest in occupational therapy and a desire to deliver occupational focused interventions that support recovery.
  • Holds previous experience of working in a mental health setting.
  • Has the ability to work on own initiative and adapt their skills to meet the needs of the patients and the service.
  • Has previous experience and confidence within group facilitation.
  • Evidences a dynamic, creative and positive approach.
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
  • Is trustworthy, self-motivated and organised with their time.
  • Has experience and understanding of holistic, recovery focused approaches.
  • Evidences an understanding of risk assessments and outcome measurement.
  • Is keen to contribute and be part of a dedicated multi-disciplinary ward team.
  • Experience in motivating people, building independence and supporting others to learn new skills.
  • Has a full driving licence.

Location: The Woodmill, Exeter Rd, Cullompton EX15 1EA

The 18 bed unit creates a pathway for patients to step down through their recovery. Ivy is a 6 bed admission area and Rose is a 12 bed rehabilitation area, with the option to flex within the 12 bed area to a four bed section that can create a further step down with a separate entrance for those patients that are progressing well and are preparing for discharge to the community.

The aim of the service is to support women to improve their self-worth, build a better quality of life for themselves and to equip them with the skills needed for community living and increased independence.
