Managing Editor

We have a fabulous new role working for a highly regarded London based not for profit publisher, dedicated to female health, as their new Managing Editor. Reporting to the Head of Publishing, the Managing Editor will assist in coordinating, editing, publishing, and developing the organisation’s highly successful monthly journal and other supplements, which serves an international audience. The role will also take a proactive approach to developing and driving forward journal strategy and will work closely with Guest Editors and will propose topics, set schedules, and will monitor progress.

Responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing peer review for submitted manuscripts and collaborating with their partner publisher and Editorial Manager
  • Lead on process improvement to identify strategic priorities and enhance journal experience for audiences, including authors, editors, reviewers, and readers
  • Collaborating with publishing partner’s Content Acquisition team, you will develop high-impact content, including special issues and key papers
  • Line managing an Assistant Editor
  • Setting agendas and draft reporting for Editorial Board meetings
  • Responding to queries from authors, reviewers, and Editorial Board members
  • Covering for the Head of Publishing when required
  • Supporting cross-departmental projects as required

The successful Managing Editor will be educated to degree level or equivalent, ideally in a scientific discipline and will have sufficient proven experience of working within a journal environment, ideally medical/scientific, with experience of journal development, including commissioning articles and special issues. A solid understanding of the Open Access landscape is required as is knowledge of publishing policies and standards.

Line management experience is desirable as is experience of editing/proof-checking articles, ideally within an STM journals publishing environment. Candidates will need to have excellent written and spoken communications skills; first class organisational experience and the ability to work under pressure using your own initiative and as a collaborative team member.
