Job Type: Full Time, Permanent
Location: Exeter Pynes Hill Office (Hybrid working)
Salary: £25,000 per annum.
Our client is an independent, award winning, publishing company. They create books and products that ignite and nurture their readers’ hobbies and interests. They publish across art, craft, wellbeing and transport categories. They are the current IPG Specialist Consumer Publisher of the Year. The Role
They’re looking for a Junior Designer to join their in-house design team. The successful candidate will be primarily focused on the design of their books, including interior layouts, covers and jackets. They will be involved in multiple areas of the process. They will also provide creative support to the sales and marketing teams.
The successful applicant will be interested in developing their art direction skills, assisting in the photography studio during photo shoots.
They are a small team and outsource a proportion of design work, so your training will include gaining an understanding of their commissioning process.
Key Responsibilities
- involve communicating with freelance designers, art directors and illustrators
- Coordinating schedules
- Budgets and creative briefs.
- Training will be given, however excellent communication skills are a must.
Skills and Qualifications
- A keen design eye and the motivation to grow and progress as a designer.
- A strong desire to learn more about design for publishing.
- A basic understanding of layout, typography, and colour and how these can work together.
- A basic understanding of print and digital design principles.
- Some experience with key Adobe software (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator) .
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple deadlines. Organisation is key – they love a good to-do list!
- A team player who enjoys collaborating with colleagues and stake holders .
- An ability to take creative direction and constructive criticism on board. Solid communication skills in English, both written and verbal
- Preferred – an academic qualification in graphic design or other similar disciplines.
- Preferred – Portfolio showcasing strong creative skills .
- Preferred, but not essential:
- Experience in publishing.
- A love of books and an interest in one or more of their publishing categories.
- Experience with designing for print.
- An interest in developing styling and art direction skills.
