Location: Rishworth, HX6 4QA

Salary: An annual salary will form part of the overall package to be discussed and agreed at interview.

(Living on site is necessary to fulfil the duties within this role, therefore the post holder is rewarded with onsite living accommodation in the form of a three-bedroom flat. Meals during shifts and all mains utilities are included)

Job Type: Full Time, Term Time Only

Hours: This is a full-time position of 40 hours per week with shifts agreed annually as per the vagaries of the timetable and rota.

Set in the heart of West Yorkshire the School has occupied magnificent buildings in 140 acres of beautiful countryside for the last 300 years.

The Role

This is an exciting opportunity for a driven individual to join an enthusiastic and caring Boarding team as House Parent to students within the Ryburn Boys boarding House.

As a House Parent your role will be to act in loco parentis delivering a high level of pastoral and wrap around care to the Boarders resident at Rishworth School. Assisting with all boarding duties, activities, overnight supervision, general wellbeing and on-call first aid requirements within the Boarding House.

You will provide top quality pastoral care, upholding student welfare, maintain discipline and ensure a cohesive accommodation environment is maintained at all times.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conducting wake up calls, morning room checks, locking of the boarding house before School and ensuring all House members attend breakfast roll call on time.
  • Supporting students who are unwell or injured by providing first aid, medical support and escorting students to medical appointments (when required)
  • Maintain open communication with teaching staff to ensure academic progress of each house member is monitored and high standards maintained - reporting any progress or issues to parents/guardians as appropriate.
  • Ensuring boarding standards are maintained to the highest degree to allow students to fully access and enjoy all that a boarding experience and education has to offer.
  • Supervision of boarding students during shift.
  • Ensuring evening roll call is completed with all students present and boarding house secured before 'lights out’.
  • Running and supporting after-school and weekend activities and trips.
  • Offering support and guidance to all boarders, promoting student welfare and ensuring policies are adhered to with an ethos of promoting a positive mental health provision.
  • Establishing and maintaining positive relationships with parents, agents and guardians of boarders.
  • Working efficiently and effectively in a team of boarding staff.
  • The promotion of the boarding school ethos and development.
  • Keeping up to date with boarding issues nationally, via InSeT and by being familiar with, and responding appropriately to, key requirements and publications (such as the School’s own handbooks and statements on Boarding)
  • Liaising as necessary with other colleagues and with external persons and agencies, as required.
  • Contributing to documentation, reviews and publications relevant for compliance.
  • Sharing responsibility for Health and Safety within the Boarding Houses.
  • Being prepared to act in a serious emergency, even when not 'on duty’.

Skills and Experience

  • A good level of education and experience of working with young people.
  • First aid qualification (training can be provided)
  • Mental Health first aid qualification (training can be provided)
  • Experience of working within high demand environments with excellent time management skills.
  • Confident to act on own initiative and be self-motivated Collaborative, positive, naturally 'customer’ focussed, tactful and patient.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstratable experience / qualification within the Independent Sector or Boarding environment (Desirable)
  • Experience of working with young people (Desirable)
