Description of Role: To ensure the efficient and effective undertaking of civil engineering activity including highways, bridges, street lighting and countryside works as assigned.

  • To undertake the duties of a Highways Operative having the necessary skills to undertake, the maintenance and construction of roads, bridges, drainage, highways electrical and associated works and to ensure a personal high quality of workmanship at all times.

General operational activities may include but are not necessarily restricted to:-

  • The erection and removal of appropriate temporary traffic and pedestrian safety signs, barriers and any other associated equipment.

Participation in gully cleansing activities including operating the gully tanker (where appropriately licenced).

  • To undertake the duties of a Highways Operative in the provision of skilled operational activities including the need to work to precise levels and requirements, in construction work in a number of tasks. Such tasks may include, but are not necessarily restricted to:

o Kerbing, flagging, block paving, drainage, walling, fencing and guardrails, steel-fixing, formwork, concreting, erection of timber and metal structures, operating specialist plant and machinery, winter maintenance and undertake maintenance on public rights of way.

o The post holder will require a number of the above skills but not necessary all, however they must have the ability to provide specialist skills in at least one of the areas covered in the points above.

Highways Operative to work in a carriageway patching gang, laying by hand 10 - 20 Tonne of bitmac per day.

As working in a highly mechanised operation a Cat CE full driving licence would be essential and plant driving experience or certification (NPORS or similar) for any one of roller, Bobcat Skidsteer, and road planer would be desirable.

Ability to rake tar would be advantageous but not essential and must have own transport to get to Depot or site. May be required to work from other depots at Bishop Auckland, Chilton or Wolsingham as occasional holiday cover etc.
