Based in West Sussex- Chichester

37 Hours Per Week

£17.59 Per Hour (PAYE) or £21.70 Per Hour (Umbrella)

Working Arrangements - Hybrid working with options to work from home or in the office, depending on the work being carried out. Office location - County Hall Chichester, with options to work from one of the other hub buildings

The Job -  

The Health and Safety officer supports the Senior Health & Safety (H&S) Officer in providing advice and support to the programmes of work and management systems that comply with HSW standards and policies across WSCC. You'll be working under the broad direction of a Senior H&S Officer and will be expected to exercise independent judgement and initiative in most day to day situations, making policy interpretations and practice decisions, and presenting a credible image to clients as a knowledgeable and professional H&S Officer. You'll be the technical expert within a specific area of HSW, e.g. advising schools on managing medication. You'll also be responsible for running projects under the guidance of the Senior H&S Officer and for designing, delivering, evaluating and developing HSW training, both generally and within the specialism. There will be a need to travel independently to / from a variety of council workplaces including temporary sites as required, and to work outside at times to carry out site monitoring visits. Personal protective equipment (PPE) will need to be worn when required, e.g. safety footwear, hard hat, high visibility clothing or disposable gloves. The role sometimes will require physical demands such as climbing ladders and accessing awkward spaces.

Applicant Requirements-

A National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) Certificate or National Vocational Qualification Level 3 in Occupational Safety and Health Practice or a British Safety Council Level 3 Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health.

Technical membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), Associate membership of International Institute of Risk and Safety Managers (IIRSM), or equivalent.

An appropriate qualification (or appropriate relevant experience) in a specialist area is essential for which the postholder has responsibility and accountability, e.g. advising on managing medicines in schools.

Good working knowledge of IT applications and procedures.

You will have previous experience of providing an effective HSW service with the relevant specialism, contributing to policy and procedural improvements and providing a high level of advice and guidance

You'll be able to demonstrate good theoretical, practical and procedural knowledge of the interpretation and application of HSW, fire and other associated legislation

You'll have experience of developing systems and procedures to improve employee HSW in a large organisation, with diverse workplaces and multiple HSW risks, issues and environments, and the HSW of non-employees affected by another employer.

You'll be adept at building effective working relationships with stakeholders at all levels of the organisation.
