Smith Partnership is a leading law firm in the East Midlands. As Head of HR, you will have the opportunity to fully engage with our growth plans and drive our progress. We are a forward-thinking and progressive company employing over 200 staff throughout 5 offices. This role reports to Kevin McGrath and works closely with the Management Committee on a day-to-day basis.

As Head of HR at Smith Partnership, you will:
  • Be a vital contributor to our people plans and overarching human resource strategy, supporting the firm by driving a performance culture.
  • Be responsible for a diverse range of HR-related activities throughout the employee lifecycle, from onboarding to parting company. 
  • Work closely with department heads to become a trusted coach and advisor, determine their resource requirements, and develop succession and talent plans.
  • Develop and drive our learning and development plans.
  • Review and assess our employee value proposition and develop rewards and benefits that make Smith Partnership a Great Place to Work.
  • Support the salary review and bonus process and ensure we have best-in-class people policies and practices.
  • Be the go-to person for first-line advice and support for our line managers and boost employee engagement, drive performance and ensure consistency in applying our people policies and practices.
  • Provide one-on-one guidance to employees dealing with everything from parental leave to holiday queries.
  • Oversee the human resource information system, ensuring everything is up-to-date and accurate.
  • Line manage and mentor our HR Advisor.


We are keen to speak to people about this Head of HR opportunity who have the following skills and experience:
  • CIPD qualification - working towards or having achieved Level 5
  • Educated to a degree level is desirable.
  • Experience operating at a strategic level, having developed and implemented people plans, ideally in a professional services setting.
  • With up-to-date employment law and proven HR generalist experience, you will have provided expert human resource advice in complex, challenging scenarios.
  • Good IT skills in Microsoft 365 applications.
  • The ability to quickly switch between strategic thinking and doing the day job.
  • Be adept at seeing the bigger picture and the ability to see the devil in the detail.
  • A Master of Diplomacy who can hold their own with keen legal minds.
