We're recruiting Glasgow-based GIS Technicians for a leading publishing company. This is a full-time contract role lasting 10 months and paying a salary of £12ph.

As GIS Technician your role will be to enhance geographic vector databases and associated information using GIS technology and to provide this content in a timely and cost-effective manner for map creation projects. You will adhere to
editorial policy and guidelines to ensure that all content is up-to-date and of a high quality. This would be a great opportunity for a graduate with good IT skills or an experienced technician.

Projects

1. Capture physical feature names from around the world into the core vector and name databases using a variety of authoritative and copyright-free sources.

2. Merge existing geographic datasets to form a seamless single global database from which mapping of anywhere in the world can be derived.

3. Improve the spatial accuracy of existing geographic datasets using online sources, including aerial imagery.

Responsibility
  • GIS data editing - Edit GIS data to keep it up to date, add content, and improve its structure
  • Quality control - Ensure all GIS data adheres to editorial policy and standards
  • Information acquisition and analysis - Work with Information specialists to ensure the best possible information sources are used to create and maintain content
  • Time management - Ensure that all work is done to customer contractual deadlines
Skills & Experience
  • Experience of editing GIS vector data within ESRI file or Enterprise-level geodatabase.
  • Practical knowledge of ESRI GIS editing software, either ArcMap or ArcGIS Pro
  • The ability to research and interpret mapping sources to help make decisions on the appropriate representation of geographic features within the database
  • Good communicator

  • Good team player, cooperative, and helpful
  • Ability to work calmly and effectively under pressure
  • Ability to explain GIS issues and solutions to colleagues
  • The ability to create high-quality mapping from GIS vector databases (desirable)
  • Good knowledge of online mapping sources (desirable)
