Are you a dynamic Scientist who would like to be part of pioneering research in Core Flooding, Carbon Capture & EOR in the oil and gas industry Our client, an internationally recognised Independent Global Chemical Testing Laboratory and Consultancy, is offering exciting opportunities for lab-based Senior and Junior Geologists/Geochemists/Scientists to join their dedicated team in Livingston, Scotland.

About the Role:

As a Geologist / Geochemist, you will be at the forefront of their Core Flooding, Carbon Capture & EOR projects. This position offers a fantastic opportunity to contribute your expertise to customer-focused initiatives and be part of a dynamic and motivated team. Senior roles involve leveraging your expertise in the laboratory to contribute to routine testing and applied research for the oil, gas, and energy industry. Junior roles involve supporting the above projects with your geological and analytical skills, with a particular focus on specimen preparation and routine SEM/EDX analysis.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Reservoir rock selection, including hand specimen analysis, SEM, EDX and porosity and permeability measurements to select representative core samples for testing
  • Testing in High Temperature/High Pressure flow rigs to determine the potential impacts of injected fluids on rock structure, geochemistry and permeability, including routine core formation damage testing, EOR testing and fluid / rock interactions associated with Carbon Capture and Underground storage (CCUS)
  • Pre- and post-treatment geological analysis of test specimens, and interpretation of results
  • Interpretation of SEM/EDX analysis of a variety rock samples to deduce modes of formation damage
  • Designing and implementing new test protocols relating to routine and R+D activities
  • Following test processes, plotting and interpreting data and reporting

Key Responsibilities for the Senior role would also include:

  • Customer liaison including technical updates, reporting and presentation of results
  • Project management
  • Day to day management and supervision of scientists working on the projects
  • Opportunities for involvement in the publishing of technical papers

Working Patterns and Benefits:

They offer a variety of working patterns upon completion of probation, including a compressed week and 9-day fortnight. Additionally, there are opportunities for travel and secondments to international laboratories.

Newcomers to the field could begin with a salary around £23,000, while those with experience in people/project management, petroleum geology, core flooding, and/or enhanced oil recovery (EOR) could potentially earn up to £50,000.

The ideal candidate:

Essential skills/experience

  • Degree in geology, petroleum geology, geochemistry (or a related discipline)
  • Ability to adapt to a variety of different laboratory procedures
  • Work with accuracy and traceability, using Good Laboratory Practices (GLP)
  • Produce high quality, repeatable work completed to timescale
  • Follow procedures and Health & Safety Regulations

Desirable skills/experience

  • Direct experience with SEM/EDX analysis
  • Practical experience in an industrial setting
  • Practical geological/ mineralogical experience
  • Project management skills
  • Working knowledge of ISO 9001
  • Direct experience of lab-based core analysis would be advantageous.
