As a Land Drainage Worker/Tractor Operator you will operate a tractor mounted flail mower during the months of August through to October, and undertake general land drainage duties for the rest of the year. The Board own a fleet of modern tractors with Herder flail mowing equipment so previous tractor driving experience is essential.

Standard hours are 38 hours per week, but overtime up to 72 hours per week is expected during the cutting season. Overtime may also be available at other times of the year depending on the Boards workload.

In addition to tractor driving, you would also be required to carry out other land drainage tasks including knapsack spraying, hand mowing, culvert cleaning and construction, piling and tree clearance. The above list is not exhaustive and may vary, as flexibility is key with any small team.

As a member of the Board’s Operations Team, you will need to be enthusiastic, conscientious, and self-motivated with the ability to work both alone and as a team member.

Responsibilities include:

  • Tractor mounted flail mowing.
  • Pipe laying.
  • Removal of trees and bushes from drain banks.
  • Hand mowing weed growth from drainage channels.
  • Piling drain banks.
  • Knapsack spraying.
  • Reactive culvert blockage removal.
  • Transport of materials to various work sites.
  • Together with other duties as and when they arise.

Qualifications, skills and experience required:

  • Tractor driving experience is essential.
  • Must hold a full UK driving licence.
  • Ability to work on own initiative.
  • Good organisational skills.
  • Willingness to work long and unsocial hours.
  • A good knowledge and understanding of all aspects of health and safety at work.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with the other team members.
  • Must have excellent timekeeping.

Desirable but not essential skills/knowledge:

  • Knowledge of the North Level IDB catchment.
  • First Aid qualifications
  • NRSWA Street Works training/experience.
  • Chainsaw training/experience
