Development Chemist
  • Annual Salary: £26k - £35k

We are seeking a Development Chemist to join our innovative team. This role involves researching and developing new formulations in compliance with cosmetic regulations and standards to meet specific briefs. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in the New Product Development (NPD) process, from ideation to post-production, ensuring projects are delivered on time and in full.

Day-to-day of the role:
  • Attend NPD meetings, complete actions, and communicate any issues to the team or stakeholders.
  • Develop safe, legal, and efficacious cosmetics and toiletries that meet brand or customer requirements.
  • Deputise for Senior Chemists or Head of R&D on product development-related issues.
  • Liaise with customers and business development teams, providing technical support and engaging in meetings.
  • Generate safety assessments and product dossiers for formulations.
  • Create new product development prototypes for business development.
  • Review technical data from test discrepancies and update reports.
  • Approve stability testing on products and discuss results and issues with Senior Chemists.
  • Interact with raw material and perfume company representatives, approving and monitoring visits.
  • Collaborate with Process, Purchasing, Production, and Quality departments.
  • Train and develop staff involved in the department’s daily operations.
  • Ensure routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and validate approved formulations before production.
  • Maintain excellent housekeeping standards in the laboratory.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • Degree in Chemistry or Science, preferably Cosmetic Science; SCS diploma considered.
  • Experience in technical roles supporting development projects.
  • Proficient in basic chemistry; experience in formulating various personal care products is advantageous.
  • Capable of innovative formulation, development, and management of personal care products.
  • Good communication skills, able to present ideas logically and interact effectively within project teams.
  • Computer literate, especially in Microsoft Office applications like Word and Excel.
  • Self-motivated and enthusiastic, able to work independently and drive personal development.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to plan and report laboratory experiments accurately.
  • Problem-solving skills and experience or understanding of working to GMP, BRC standards.
