Electrical Design Engineer

Location: Stockton-On-Tees

Reporting to: Lead Electrical Engineer

Job Overview

We are delighted to represent our client, a leading Electrical Engineering and Design Consultancy, in offering an opportunity to join their team as an Electrical Design Engineer. Established in 2012 and based in Stockton-On-Tees, our client boasts a solid reputation for delivering exceptional electrical engineering services across various sectors, including Power Generation, Transmission & Distribution, Onshore and Offshore Renewables, Manufacturing, Petrochemical, and Oil & Gas. This role, reporting to the Lead Electrical Engineer, offers the chance to contribute significantly to the success and growth of the company through expert electrical design and innovation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed electrical system designs for electrical projects, including schematics, single line drawings, layout drawings, general arrangement drawings, cable block diagrams, material take-offs and other documentation required for both LV and HV electrical equipment.
  • Specify and select appropriate electrical equipment such as transformers, circuit breakers, and switchgear. Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations.
  • Designing the layout for electrical substations, considering safety, efficiency, and reliability. Specify equipment placement, bus configurations, and grounding systems.
  • Design cable and cable containment layouts for power distribution. Specify cable types, sizes, and installation methods.
  • Ensure designs comply with relevant electrical codes, standards, and regulations. Stay updated on industry codes and incorporate changes into designs.
  • Provide input for cost estimation and budgeting for electrical components and systems. Optimise designs for cost-effectiveness without compromising reliability.
  • Work closely with other engineering disciplines, project managers and clients.
  • Prepare detailed design documentation, including drawings, specifications, and schedules. Coordinate design efforts to integrate electrical systems with overall project requirements.
  • Maintain accurate records of design changes and revisions.
  • Identify potential risks associated with electrical designs and propose mitigation strategies.
  • Provide support during the construction and commissioning phases of projects. Address any design-related issues that arise during installation.
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies in power distribution and integrate innovative solutions where applicable.

Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience:

  • A minimum of HNC in Electrical Engineering or similar from a relevant university.
  • Solid understanding of electrical systems, principles and design, including switchgear, transformers, and protection relays.
  • Proven experience in designing electrical systems. Practical experience in designing cable layouts for power distribution.
  • Experience in substation design including layout, equipment selection and substation earthing would be an advantage.
  • Hands-on experience with protection and control systems, relay coordination, and control panel design would be an advantage.
  • Expertise in AutoCAD.
  • Ability to identify and solve complex technical problems in electrical designs.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and a commitment to designing systems with safety as a top priority.
