A degree or equivalent qualification OR significant experience working in a complex service area, preferably in the NHS or another emergency service.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Referral Support where the aim is to take calls from crews seeking to refer to various external organisations, facilitate those referrals, populate databases and provide advice and support to crews generally in these areas.
  • Handle sensitively and offer reassurance, patience and understanding to those callers who may be elderly, hard of hearing, disabled, difficult to understand, anxious or under emotional stress, when for example calling to report the death of a relative.
  • Facilitate negotiation between referring and potential receiving units.
  • Co-ordinate emergency transport between units, keep all parties informed of progress/problems and record all actions and conversations.
  • Collect transport team status twice daily and record information.
  • Delay, error or inaccuracy in the delivery of this service could result in avoidable delay in the delivery of care to very sick premature babies, and potentially contribute to poor outcomes.
  • Collecting Critical Care Capacity Information, across a range of specialities, where the aim is to elicit and record information about immediately available capacity to accept patients.
  • Advising on Available Capacity, where the aim in a variety of services (National Paediatric Intensive Care, ante-natal transfers for neonatal intensive care and paediatric beds and cubicles) is to steer those seeking a transfer towards the units best placed to help, and to place the advice in a larger context where necessary.
  • District Nursing Services, where the aim is to be the out of hours access point for clients of the services and to provide the duty nurses with sufficient information to allow them to decide on appropriate action. The main users are the patients themselves and there is a frequent need to deal sensitively with anxious and/or distressed callers.
