Insight Executive Group are delighted to be working with Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust who are recruiting a Design Manager on a full-time permanent basis. The role is a Band 8c position (£71,417 - £81,138)

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a world renowned centre of clinical excellence and one of the largest teaching trusts in the UK and is made up of four hospitals - the John Radcliffe Hospital (including Children’s Hospital, West Wing, Eye Hospital, Heart Centre and Women’s Centre), the Churchill Hospital, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, all located in Oxford and the Horton Hospital in Banbury, north Oxfordshire.

The Design Manager is a pivotal member of the Director of Capital Development’s senior leadership team. The post-holder will have a vital role in overseeing the design and development of healthcare built environment. They will be responsible for managing and coordinating all aspects of the design, ensuring the projects are delivered in line with relevant regulations and guidance, on time and within budget. This role demands a strong understanding of healthcare design principles, project management expertise, and the ability to lead a diverse team of designers and consultants.

The successful Design Manager will be responsible for:

  • the success of a portfolio of capital projects in meeting business needs of the Trust and ensuring efficient use of the Trust estate
  • deputising for the Director of Capital Development as required
  • responsible for the development, implementation and maintenance of the OUH Design Standards.
  • communicating the 5-Year Capital Programme and vision effectively (this will involve highly complex situations where there will be significant barriers to understanding)
  • owning and communicating the vision for the Masterplan and 5-Year Capital Programme and being its 'champion’, providing clear leadership and direction through the life of the programme
  • providing overall direction and leadership for the delivery and implementation of the Capital Programme with personal accountability for its outcome, including taking a lead role where required in property/land disposals, acquisitions and negotiations with both third parties and external investors
  • accountable for the Capital Programme’s governance arrangements by ensuring the programme, including its investment, is established and managed according to appropriate requirements and quality
  • advising and assisting capital team members on the activities required to deliver the programme and to enable benefits to be realised. Plan and manage a highly complex capital investment strategy, appropriate to the various stages of individual projects, taking account of the Trust’s overall capital investment position
  • for the production and maintenance of key programme information, including the programme co-ordination, publication of individual project briefs and the preparation of business cases as required for sign-off by the Trust

The successful Design Manager will be able to demonstrate:

  • Chartered Construction professional RICS, RIBA, C Eng, ARB or similar
  • Degree/Diploma in line with key competencies in a design discipline
  • Masters or equivalent experience
  • experience of a variety of project design, planning and programming techniques
  • proven expertise to lead, plan, manage, interact with colleagues and deliver projects successfully in a spirit of cooperation.
  • ability to seek and share information and ideas in a confident and compelling manner, using a range of techniques to achieve an effective outcome.
  • clear aptitude to engage with internal and external stakeholders and service providers and business partners to proactively manage the utility and value of the estate
  • comprehensive ability to use relevant design software packages such as AutoCAD, ADB and Revit
  • high level of written communication and analytical skills
  • ability to analyse income and expenditure financial information rapidly and apply sound commercial acumen and sound technical knowledge to maximise value of healthcare estate
  • understanding of relevant design guidance e.g. HBN/HTM and derogation processes
